Axle Shaft (323 With A/T): Removal

  1. Raise vehicle and support with stands. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove wheel/tire assembly. Remove side covers. Raise lock tab on axle shaft nut. Apply brakes and loosen axle shaft nut but do not remove nut.
  2. Remove lower ball joint clamp bolt and nut. Pry down lower control arm and disconnect ball joint from steering knuckle. Insert pry bar between inner CV joint and transaxle bearing housing. DO NOT  insert pry bar too far and cause damage to seal.

  3. Carefully tap end of pry bar lightly to unseat inner CV joint assembly at transaxle. See Fig 1 . Do not remove at this time. Grip hub assembly and carefully pull outward.
  4. Remove axle shaft nut. Pull out on hub assembly and remove axle shaft from hub. A bearing puller may be used to push axle shaft from hub. Remove axle shaft from transaxle and install Differential Side Gear Holder (49G 030 455 ) to prevent contamination.
