Low & Reverse

  1. Lubricate low and reverse brake piston with clean ATF and install in transmission case. Position thrust ring, piston return spring, snap ring, and one-way clutch inner race into transmission case.
  2. Hold inner race in position and install one-way clutch inner race attaching bolts. Check that return spring is centered on race before tightening. Tighten bolts. Install steel dished plate, steel and friction plates.
  3. Install retaining plate and snap ring. Check clearance between retaining plate and snap ring. If clearance is incorrect, it may be adjusted by installing retaining plate of different thickness. See LOW & REVERSE PLATE THICKNESS  table.
  4. On E4N71B and L4N71B models, clearance should be .032-.041" (.80-1.05 mm). Apply air pressure and check low and reverse operation.
  5. On JM600 and L3N71B models, clearance should be .032-.049" (.80-1.25 mm). Apply air pressure and check low and reverse operation.

  6. Install governor needle bearing and thrust washer. Slide governor distributor assembly on output shaft from front of shaft. Install shaft and governor distributor into case, using care not to damage distributor rings.
  7. Install connecting drum with sprag by rotating drum clockwise using slight pressure and wobbling to align plates with hub and sprag assembly. Connecting drum should now be free to rotate clockwise only. This verifies that sprag is correctly installed and operative.
  8. Install rear internal gear and snap ring on shaft. Secure thrust bearing and washer with petroleum jelly and install rear planetary carrier. Install rear planetary carrier snap ring. Note that this snap ring is thinner than clutch drum snap rings.
