Transmission Disassembly

  1. On all models, remove torque converter. Drain ATF through rear end of extension housing. Mount transmission in holding fixture.
  2. On E4N71B and L4N71B models, remove lock-up solenoid and "O" ring.
  3. On JM600 and L3N71B models, remove governor tube connector from converter housing.
  4. On all models, remove bolts retaining housing and remove converter housing.
  5. On L3N71B models, remove downshift solenoid and "O" ring. Remove vacuum diaphragm, rod and "O" ring. Remove speedometer retaining bolt and pinion assembly.
  6. On E4N71B, JM600 and L4N71B models, remove overdrive component case assembly. Remove front high-reverse clutch thrust washer. Remove needle bearing and race. Remove input shaft and intermediate shaft. Attach Oil Pump Remover (MD998390), and remove oil pump from overdrive case.
  7. On E4N71B, JM600 and L4N71B models, remove overdrive servo cover and loosen overdrive band servo piston stem. Remove overdrive planetary gear and direct clutch assembly. Remove needle bearing, race and direct clutch thrust washer. Remove overdrive brake band and strut.
  8. On E4N71B, JM600 and L4N71B models, remove overdrive servo assembly by lightly tapping retainer. Remove accumulator snap ring. Apply air pressure and remove accumulator plug, piston and spring. See Fig 1 . Remove overdrive cancel solenoid and "O" ring.

  9. On E4N71B, JM600 and L4N71B models, remove drum support from overdrive case. Remove downshift solenoid, vacuum diaphragm, rod and "O" rings. Remove speedometer pinion from rear extension housing.
  10. On all models, remove oil pan and check for signs of contamination or internal part damage. Mark valve body retaining bolts for reassembly and remove valve body assembly. Mark and remove manual valve from valve body.
  11. On L3N71B model, loosen band servo piston stem lock nut and tighten piston stem. This will prevent front high-reverse clutch drum assembly from dropping out during front pump removal.
  12. On L3N71B model, mark and remove input shaft from front pump. Input shaft must be reassembled correctly. Attach puller to front pump and remove. Remove front high-reverse clutch thrust washer and bearing race.
  13. On all models, loosen 2nd band servo lock nut and tighten piston stem. If more than 2 turns are required to tighten stem, band is defective. Back off piston stem and release band.
  14. Remove brake band strut. Remove brake band, high-reverse clutch and forward clutch as an assembly. Install a band clip in brake band to prevent band from stretching open. See Fig 2 .

  15. On L3N71B models, remove pump thrust bearing and rear forward clutch thrust washer. Remove rear forward clutch hub, front planetary carrier and connecting shell. Remove rear forward clutch thrust bearing, front planetary carrier thrust washer and thrust bearing.
  16. On all models, loosen 2nd band servo retaining bolts. Apply air pressure to remove 2nd band servo. See Fig 3 . Remove retaining bolts and 2nd band servo assembly. Check operation of one-way clutch before removing. See Fig 4 .

  17. Remove rear planetary carrier snap ring and rear planetary carrier assembly. Remove output shaft snap ring. Remove rear connecting drum with internal gear.
  18. Pry out one end of snap ring retaining low and reverse brake assembly. Grip snap ring with pliers and remove snap ring. Remove low and reverse brake clutch assembly. Remove rear extension housing. See Fig 5 -Fig 8 .
CAUTION: Use care not to lose parking pawl, spring and retainer washer.
  19. Remove output shaft with governor assembly. Remove governor thrust washer and needle bearing. Remove one-way clutch retaining hexhead bolts. Remove one-way clutch inner race, return thrust washer and low and reverse return spring.
  20. Apply air pressure to remove low and reverse brake piston. See Fig 9 . Remove shifter snap ring from inner transmission case. Remove lock nut, manual plate and parking rod. Remove neutral safety switch and manual shaft.
  21. On E4N71B and L4N71B models, remove overdrive indicator switch and "O" ring.
