Forward (Rear) Clutch: Reassembly

  1. Apply ATF to drum, seals and piston. Install seals on piston. To avoid seal damage, apply equal pressure to piston and rotate during reassembly. Install return springs and retainer. Install spring compressor and install snap ring.
  2. Install dished plate with dish side outward. Install steel and friction plates in the same sequence as were removed. Install retainer plate and snap ring. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between snap ring and retainer ring.
  3. On JM600 and RX7, clearance should be .031-.059" (.8-1.5 mm). If not within specifications, check all clutch components for wear and replace as necessary.
  4. On L3N71B models, clearance should be .031-.063" (.8-1.6 mm). If not within specifications, check all clutch components for wear and replace as necessary.
  5. On E4N71B and L4N71B models, clearance should be .031-.039" (.8-1.0 mm). If not within specification, check all clutch components for wear and replace as necessary.
