Transmission Assembly
- Lubricate low-reverse brake piston with transmission fluid and install in transmission case. Position thrust ring, piston return spring, snap ring, and one-way clutch inner race into transmission case.
- Hold inner race in position and install one-way clutch inner race attaching bolts. Check that return spring is centered on race before tightening. Tighten bolts. Install steel dished plate, steel and friction plates. See LOW-REVERSE BRAKE PLATE USAGE .
- Install retaining plate and snap ring. Check clearance between retaining plate and snap ring. See Fig 1. Clearance should be .032-.049" (.80-1.25 mm). If clearance is incorrect, it may be adjusted by installing a retaining plate of a different thickness.
- Plates are available in sixes from .465" (11.6 mm) to .504" 12.6 mm) in 008" (.2 mm) increments for JM600 models. On all other models, plates are available in sizes from .307" (7.8 mm) to .346" (6.8 mm) in .006" (.2 mm) increments. Install correct plate and recheck clearance. Using air gun with tapered rubber tip, check low and reverse brake operation.
- Install governor thrust washer and needle bearing. Slide governor distributor assembly on output shaft from front of shaft. Install shaft and governor distributor into case, using care not to damage distributor rings.
- Install connecting drum with sprag by rotating drum clockwise using a slight pressure and wobbling to align plates with hub and sprag assembly. Connecting drum should now be free to rotate clockwise only. This verifies that sprag is correctly installed and operative.
- Install rear internal snap ring on shaft. Secure thrust bearing and washer with petroleum jelly and install rear planetary carrier. Install rear planetary carrier snap ring. Note that this snap ring is thinner than clutch drum snap rings.LOW-REVERSE BRAKE PLATE USAGE

Secure thrust bearings with petroleum jelly. Install assembly into transmission case.
- Parts must be properly seated for front and total end play measurements to be accurate. To measure high-reverse (front) clutch end play, use dial gauge or caliper with 7.0" base. First, measure from rear hub thrust bearing race to case (dimension "A"). See Fig 3.
- Assemble high-reverse (front) clutch and forward (rear) clutch drum assemblies together and lay flat on bench. Make sure rear hub thrust bearing is properly seated. Measure from front face of clutch drum to top of thrust bearing race (dimension "B"). See Fig 4.
- On L3N71B and 3N71B transmissions, measure from top of oil pump shaft to installed gasket (dimension "C"). Install thrust washer. Measure from top of oil pump shaft to, thrust washer (dimension "D"). See Fig 5.
- On L4N71B and JM600 transmissions, measure between top of drum support shaft (high-reverse clutch and forward clutch side) to installed gasket (dimension "C"). Install thrust washer. Measure from top of drum support shaft (high-reverse clutch and forward clutch side) to thrust washer (dimension "D"). See Fig 6.
- First, subtract .004" (.1 mm) from dimension "A". Then subtract dimension "B" from result. Note this result. Then subtract dimension "D" from dimension "C". The result of sum ("A" minus .004" (.1 mm) minus "B") less sum ("C" minus "D") is high-reverse (front) clutch end.
- Front end play range is .020-.031" (.5-.8 mm). Front end play can be adjusted by changing thicknesses of high-reverse (front) clutch thrust washers. These washers are available in thicknesses from .051-.106" (1.3-2.7 mm) in .008" (.2 mm) increments.
- Total end play is result of sum ("A" minus .004" (.1 mm) less dimension "C". Total end play range is .0098-.0197" (.25-.50 mm). Change total end play with oil pump cover bearing races of different thicknesses. Bearing races are available in thicknesses of .047-.087" (1.2-2.2 mm) in .08" (.2 mm) increments.
- Install brake band, band strut and band servo. Lubricate servo "O" rings before installing. Install and tighten retainer bolts. Loosen piston stem. Finger tighten brake band servo piston stem enough to prevent brake band and strut from falling out.
- Do NOT adjust at this time. On 3N71B and L3N71B, go to step 26. On L4N71B, JM600 and E4N71B transmissions, apply petroleum jelly to the bearing race and thrust washer and mount them to drum support. Mount drum support gasket to drum support after coating with petroleum jelly. Apply transmission fluid to "O" ring of drum support.
- Align drum support with OD case to transmission case and install. Make sure they are properly aligned. Install the OD case and temporarily tighten it using 2 converter housing securing bolts. Insert the intermediate shaft, being especially careful of its direction.
- Overdrive pack end play and overdrive total end play must be correct. To check overdrive pack end play, assemble direct clutch assembly, overdrive planetary gear set and connecting drum.
- Install this assembly on overdrive pack. Install oil pump bearing, gasket and overdrive pack on oil pump. Measure` dimensions "F" and "H". See Fig 7. Attach thrust washer and needle bearing to drum support and overdrive case. Measure dimensions "E" and "G".
- Result of sum ("E" minus .004" (.1 mm) less dimension "F" is overdrive pack end play. Overdrive pack end play range is .020-.031" (.5-.8 mm). Overdrive pack end play can be changed with overdrive thrust washers of different thicknesses. These washers, which are same as high-reverse (front) clutch thrust washers, are available in thicknesses of .051-.106" (1.3-2.7 mm) in .008" (.2 mm) increments.
- Result of sum ("G" minus .004" (.1 mm) less "H" is overdrive total end play. Total overdrive end play range is .0098-.0197" (.25-.50 mm). Adjust total overdrive end play with different thicknesses of overdrive bearing race. Races are available in thicknesses from .047-.087" (12-2.2 mm) in .008" (.2 mm) increments.
- Adjust band. See appropriate SERVICING article. Make sure brake band strut is correctly installed. Tighten piston stem to 60-84 INCH lbs. (7-10 N.m). Back off 2 full turns and tighten piston stem lock nut.
- Lubricate overdrive servo "O" rings with clean ATF. Install brake band, band strut and overdrive band servo. Apply clean ATF to seal ring of direct clutch. Install overdrive bearing and race, overdrive thrust washer and overdrive pack on drum support.
- Make sure brake band strut is correctly installed. Apply clean ATF to "O" ring of oil pump. Install needle bearing, race and oil pump. Make sure oil pump housing and oil pump have been centered correctly. Adjust overdrive band. Tighten piston stem to 61.2-86.4 INCH lbs. (7-10 N.m).
