Transmission Assembly
- Remove torque converter. Drain ATF through end of rear extension. Mount transmission in holding fixture. Remove lock-up solenoid from E4N71B models. On all models, remove governor tube. Remove converter housing. Remove oil pan and check contents for signs of contamination or internal part damage.
- Loosen 2nd band servo lock nut. Tighten piston stem of 2nd band servo. If more than 2 turns are required to tighten stem, band is worn out. Back off stem to release pressure. On models without overdrive, go to step 5. On models with overdrive, remove overdrive assembly. Remove high-reverse (front) clutch thrust washer, needle bearing and race.
- Take out input shaft and intermediate shaft. Attach slide, hammers to pump and remove pump. Remove overdrive servo cover. Loosen overdrive band servo piston, stem. Remove overdrive planetary gear and direct clutch assembly. Remove needle bearing, race, land direct clutch thrust washer.
- Remove overdrive brake band and strut. Remove overdrive servo assembly by lightly tapping retainer. Remove accumulator snap ring. Apply air pressure to remove accumulator plug, piston and spring. Remove overdrive cancel solenoid and "O" ring. Remove drum support.
- On all models, remove downshift solenoid, vacuum diaphragm, diaphragm rod and "O" rings. Remove speedometer lock plate and speedometer pinion. Remove valve body bolts. Remove valve body from transmission. Remove manual valve from valve body to prevent it from dropping out accidentally.
- On L3N71B and 3N71B transmissions, loosen brake band adjusting screw lock nut and tighten screw enough to prevent high-reverse clutch drum from coming out with oil pump. Remove input shaft from oil pump. Remove pump with slide hammers. Remove high-reverse clutch thrust washer and bearing race. Back off band servo piston stem to release band.
- On all transmissions, remove brake band strut. Before removing brake band, secure ends together with clip. This will keep band from flexing enough to crack or peel. Remove brake band, high-reverse (front), clutch, forward (rear) clutch and front planetary gear set (if equipped) as assembly.
- On 3N71B and L3N71B models, remove front pump thrust bearing and forward clutch thrust washer. Remove forward clutch hub, front planetary carrier and connecting shell. Remove forward clutch thrust bearing, front planetary carrier thrust washer and thrust bearing. See Fig 1 or Fig 2 .
- On all models, back out band servo attaching bolts about half-way. Carefully apply air pressure at band servo release port to loosen servo. See Fig 3. Remove band servo retaining bolts and pull band servo out.
- On E4N71B models, check 1-way clutch for correct operation. On all models, remove rear planetary carrier snap ring. Remove rear planetary carrier. Remove output shaft snap ring. Remove rear connecting drum and internal annulus gear as assembly.
- Pry off one end of low and reverse brake snap ring. Remove snap ring by gripping loose end of ring with pliers and turning it in direction away from gap in ring while pulling outward. Remove low and reverse brake clutch assembly. Remove extension housing being careful not to lose parking pawl, spring and retaining washer.
- Remove output shaft and governor as assembly. Remove governor thrust washer and needle bearing. Remove 1-way clutch inner race attaching bolts. Remove 1-way clutch inner race, return thrust washer, low and reverse return spring and spring thrust ring.
- Apply air pressure to passage in transmission, case to remove low and reverse brake piston. See Fig 3. Remove snap rings from both ends of parking brake lever and remove lever. Remove lock nut, manual plate and parking rod. Remove inhibitor switch and manual shaft. On overdrive models, remove overdrive indicator switch and "O" ring.
