Fluid (ATF) Condition

  1. Before performing road test, check color, texture and odor of ATF. Dark or Black ATF with burned odor indicates worn friction material is in ATF. Milky Pink ATF indicates water contamination, often from road water entering filler tube or breather. Leaks in lower radiator tank or in ATF lines inside tank can also cause water contamination.
  2. ATF that is tacky and light-to-dark Brown (varnished) indicates oxidation. This can be caused by overfilling or underfilling. Overheating of ATF will also cause oxidation to occur.
  3. If ATF leak is suspected, clean area of transmission in question. Raise vehicle, supporting it securely, and start engine. Apply foot brake and place selector lever in Drive. After several minutes, stop engine and look for fresh leakage.
  4. Ensure that ATF level, shift linkage, control linkage and decent cable adjustments have been checked and adjusted as needed. Attach vacuum gauge to engine to measure intake manifold vacuum.
