Oil Pump Assembly: Inspection

  1. Check all parts for wear, cracks or other damage. Replace any defective parts. Check gear teeth for excessive wear or damage. Replace rubber seal ring if worn. Check clearances of oil pump.
  2. Using straight edge and feeler gauge, measure pump gear face-to-cover clearance. Clearance should be .0008-.0016" (.02-.04 mm). If clearance exceeds .003" (.08 mm); replace gears.
  3. Measure clearance between outer gear and crescent. Clearance should be .006-.008" (.14-.21 mm). If clearance exceeds .010" (.25 mm), replace gears.
  4. Measure clearance between outer gear and pump housing. Clearance should be .002-.008" (.05-.20 mm). If clearance exceeds .010" (.25 mm), replace gears.
  5. Check that oil seal rings and oil feed grooves are not damaged. Make sure that rings still have tension. Check side clearance of oil rings. Clearance should be .002-.006" (.04-.16 mm). Replace seal rings if clearance exceeds .006" (.16 mm).
