Direct Clutch & High-Reverse Clutch: Reassembly
- Coat new seals with clean ATF and install seals onto clutch piston and clutch drum. Install piston into drum. Position return springs and retainer on top of piston. Compress return springs and retainer and install snap ring. Install dished plate into drum.
- Install flat steel plate; then alternate lined and steel plates until all plates are installed. See DIRECT & HIGH-REVERSE CLUTCH PLATE USAGE table. Position retaining ring in drum and install clutch pack snap ring. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between clutch pack retaining snap ring and retaining plate in drum.
- Clearance should be .063-.071'" (1.6-1.8 mm) for direct and high-reverse clutches on Mazda models and direct clutches on Chrysler Corp. and Mitsubishi models; .063-.079" (1.6-2.0 mm) for direct and high-reverse clutches on Nissan/Datsun models and high-reverse clutches on Chrysler Corp. and Mitsubishi models.
- If clearance is incorrect, adjust by installing retaining plate of different thickness. Retaining plates for direct clutches are available in thicknesses ranging from .197-.244" (5.0-6.2 mm). Additional retaining plates, measuring .263" (7.2 mm) and .291" (7.4 mm), are available for direct clutches used in Nissan/Datsun 300ZX Turbo model.
- Retaining plates for high-reverse clutches used in Mazda Pickups are available in thicknesses ranging from .233-.323" (7.2-8.2 mm) in increments of .008" (.2 mm) Retaining plates for high-reverse clutches in all other models are available in thickness ranging from .197-.244" (5.0-6.2 mm). Retaining plate thicknesses change in increments of .003" (.2 mm) for all models.
