Transmission Assembly
- Lubricate low-reverse brake piston with transmission fluid and install in transmission case. Position thrust ring, piston return spring, snap ring, and one-way clutch inner race into transmission case.
- Hold inner race in position and install one-way clutch inner race attaching bolts. Check that return spring is centered on race before tightening. Tighten bolts. Install steel dished plate, steel and friction plates. See LOW-REVERSE BRAKE PLATE USAGE table.
- Install retaining plate and snap ring. Check clearance between retaining plate and snap ring. See Fig 1 . Clearance should be .032-.049" (.80-1.25 mm). If clearance is incorrect, it may be adjusted by installing a retaining plate of a different thickness.
- Plates are available in sizes from .307" (7. mm) to .348" (8.8 mm) in .008" (.2 mm) increments. Install correct plate and recheck clearance. Using an air gun with tapered rubber tip, check low and reverse brake operation. Install governor thrust washer and needle bearing.
- Slide governor distributor assembly on output shaft from front of shaft. Install shaft and governor distributor into case, using care not to damage distributor rings. Install one-way sprag into one-way clutch outer race. Arrow on sprag must face front of transmission.
- Install connecting drum with sprag by rotating drum clockwise using a slight pressure and wobbling to align plates with hub and sprag assembly. Connecting drum should now be free to rotate clockwise only. This verifies that sprag is correctly installed and operative.
- Install rear internal snap ring on shaft. Secure thrust bearing and washer with petroleum jelly and install rear planetary carrier. Install rear planetary carrier snap ring. Note that this snap ring is thinner than clutch drum snap rings.LOW-REVERSE BRAKE PLATE USAGE

Secure thrust bearings with petroleum jelly. Install assembly into transmission case. Check that parts are properly seated before proceeding with measurements. Using a dial gauge or caliper with a 7.0" base, measure from rear hub thrust bearing race to case (dimension "A"). See Fig 2 .
- Assemble front clutch and rear drum assemblies together and lay flat on bench. Make sure rear hub thrust bearing is properly seated. Measure from front face of clutch drum to top of thrust bearing race (dimension "B"). See Fig 3 .
- On L3N71B and 3N71B transmissions, measure from top of oil pump shaft to installed gasket (dimension "C"). Install thrust washer. Measure from top of oil pump shaft to, thrust washer (dimension "D"). See Fig 4 .
- On L4N71B, measure between top of drum support shaft (front clutch and rear clutch side) to installed gasket (dimension "C"). Install thrust washer. Measure from top of drum support shaft (front clutch and rear clutch side) to thrust washer (dimension "D"). See Fig 5 .
- Difference between A-.004" (.1 mm)-B and C-D is front end play and must be .020-.031" (.5-.8 mm). Front end play end play can be .020-.031" (.5-.8 mm). Front end play can be adjusted with front thrust washers. Washers are available in thicknesses from .059-.106" (1.5-2.7 mm) in .08" (.2 mm) increments.
- Total end play is the difference between A-.004" (.1 mm) and C. If not within tolerance, correct with oil pump cover bearing race. Bearing races are available in thicknesses of .047-.087" (1.2-2.2 mm) in .08" (.2 mm) increments.
- Install brake band, band strut and band servo. Lubricate servo "O" rings before installing. Install and tighten retainer bolts. Loosen piston stem. Finger tighten brake band servo piston stem enough to prevent brake band and strut from falling out.
- DO NOT adjust at this time. On 3N71B and L3N71B, go to step 26 . On L4N71B, apply petroleum jelly to the bearing race and thrust washer and mount them to drum support. Mount drum support gasket to drum support after coating with petroleum jelly. Apply transmission fluid to "O" ring of drum support.
- Align drum support with OD case to transmission case and install. Make sure they are properly aligned. Install the OD case and temporarily tighten it using 2 converter housing securing bolts. Insert the intermediate shaft, being especially careful of its direction.
- Adjust OD pack end play and total end play. Assemble direct clutch assembly, OD planetary gear set and connecting drum, and install on OD pack. Install oil pump bearing, gasket and OD pack on oil pump and measure dimensions "F" and "H". See Fig 6 .
- Attach thrust washer and needle bearing to drum support and OD case, and measure dimensions "E" and "G". See Fig 6 . Difference between dimension E-.004" (.1 mm) and dimension "F" is OD pack end play and must be within the specified value of .020-.031" (.5-.8 mm).
- OD pack end play can be adjusted with OD thrust washers. Washers are available in thicknesses from .059" (1.5 mm) to .106" (2.7 mm) in .008" (.2 mm) increments. Difference between G-.004" (.1 mm) and "H" is OD total end play.
- End play should be .0098-.0197" (.25-.50 mm). Adjust if necessary with proper size OD bearing race. Races are available in sizes from .047-.087" (1.2-2.2 mm) in .008" (.2 mm) increments. Adjust band. See appropriate SERVICING article. Make sure the brake band strut is correctly installed.
- Tighten piston stem. Back off 2 full turns and secure with lock nut. Lubricate OD servo "O" rings with ATF, install brake band, band strut and OD band servo. Apply ATF to seal ring of direct clutch.
- Install OD bearing and race, OD thrust washer and OD pack on drum support. Make sure the brake band strut is correctly installed. Apply ATF to "O" ring of oil pump, and install needle bearing and race and oil pump. Make sure they have been centered correctly.
- Adjust OD band. Tighten piston stem to specified value. Using an air gun with a tapered rubber tip, test OD band servo operation. Install accumulator parts, and secure with snap ring. Remove the 2 bolts temporarily used to tighten OD case.
- Apply sealant to seating surfaces of converter housing at bolt locations. Install converter housing on OD case and tighten, securing bolts. Install input shaft. On L3N71B and 3N71B transmissions, mount oil pump gasket on oil pump with petroleum jelly.
- Align pump to transmission case and install. Adjust band. See appropriate SERVICING article. Make sure that brake band strut is correctly installed. Tighten piston stem. Back off 2 full turns and secure with lock nut.
- On all transmissions, before proceeding with installation of valve body assembly, perform a final air check of all assembled components using an air gun with a tapered rubber tip. See Figure . This will ensure that all bolts are tightened and that seals have not been damaged during assembly.
- Check that parking pawl, pin, spring and washer are assembled correctly. Install rear extension. Install control valve body. Be sure manual valve is in alignment with selector pin. Tighten control valve body attaching bolts.
- Check alignment of pump to transmission and install converter housing. Before installing vacuum diaphragm valve, measure the depth of the hole in which it is inserted. See Fig 7 .
- Select the proper length rod. See DIAPHRAGM ROD SELECTION table. Install vacuum diaphragm. Check downshift solenoid operation and install. Install OD cancel solenoid and OD indicator switch (if equipped).
- Install inhibitor switch and check for proper operation. Before installing oil pan, check alignment and operation of control lever and parking pawl engagement. Blow mechanism with air to clean. Make final check to be sure all bolts are installed in valve body.
- Install oil pan with new gasket. Carefully inspect torque converter for damage. Check converter hub for grooves caused by hardened seals. Check bushing contact areas. Lubricate oil pump lip seal and converter neck before installing converter. Install converter, making sure that converter is properly meshed with oil pump drive gear.
