Oil Pump Assembly: Inspection

  1. Check gear teeth for excessive wear or damage. Replace rubber seal ring if worn.
  2. Check oil pump clearances as follows: Using a straight edge and feeler gauge, measure pump gear face-to-cover clearance. Clearance should be .0008-.0016" (02-.04 mm). If clearance exceeds .003" (.08 mm), replace gears. See Fig 1 .
  3. Measure clearance between outer gear and crescent. See Fig 2 . Clearance should be .006-.008" (.14-.21 mm). If clearance exceeds .010" (25 mm), replace gears.
  4. Measure clearance between outer gear and pump housing. See Fig 3 . Clearance should be .002-.008" (.05-.20 mm). If clearance exceeds .010" (.25 mm), replace gears.
  5. Check all parts for wear, cracks or other damage. Replace any defective parts. Ensure that oil seal rings and oil feed grooves are not damaged; and rings still have tension. Check side clearance of oil rings. Clearance should be .002-.006" (.04-.16 mm).
