Direct Clutch & Front Clutch: Reassembly
- Coat new seals with ATF and install seals onto clutch piston and clutch drum. Install piston into drum. Position return springs and retainer on top of piston. Compress return springs and retainer and install snap ring. Install dished plate into drum. Install a flat steel plate, then alternate lined and steel plates until all plates are installed. See FRONT CLUTCH PLATE USAGE table. Position retaining ring in drum and install clutch pack snap ring.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure clearance between clutch pack retaining snap ring and retaining plate in drum. Clearance should be .063-.071" (1.6-1.8 mm) for Mazda models or .063-.079" (1.6-2.0 mm) for Datsun/Nissan models. If clearance is incorrect, adjust by installing a retaining plate of different thickness. Selective retaining plates are available in the following thicknesses:
- Mazda - .283" (7.2 mm), .291",(7-4 m), .299" (7.6 mm), .307" (7.8 mm), .315" (8.0 mm) and .323" (8.2 mm).
- Datsun/Nissan - .197" (5.0 mm), .205" (5.2 mm), .213" (5.4 mm), .220" (5.6 mm), .228" (5.8 mm), .236" (6.0 mm), .244" (6.2 mm), .252" (6.4), .260" (6.6), .268" (6.8), .276" (7.0).
