Pinpoint Test F: The DTE (Distance To Empty) -Low Fuel Indication, Vehicle Speed, Clock Or Outside Air Temperature Display Is Inoperative

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    See DTE-Low Fuel Indication, Digital Speedometer, Clock Or Outside Air Temperature Display. REFER to: Head Up Display (HUD) - System Operation and Component Description .

    Possible Sources 

    • Communication concern
    • IPC concern
    • HUD display settings
    • HUD module

  2. F1 CHECK THE DTE (DISTANCE TO EMPTY) -LOW FUEL INDICATION, VEHICLE SPEED, CLOCK OR OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE DISPLAY IN THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER)

    • Ignition ON.

    • Verify the DTE-low fuel indication, digital speedometer, clock or outside air temperature feature operates correctly in the IPC.

    Does the inoperative feature operate correctly in the IPC? 

    Yes  For the DTE-low fuel, clock and outside air temperature display, GO to  F2 For all other displays, GO to  F3
    No  DIAGNOSE the inoperative display in the IPC. REFER to: Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes .

  3. F2 CHECK THE HUD (HEAD UP DISPLAY) MENU SETTING

    • Press the RH lower steering wheel switch HUD button.

    • Verify the DTE-low fuel, clock and outside air temperature display is set to on.

    Is the DTE-low fuel, clock and outside air temperature display is set to on? 

    Yes  GO to  F3
    No  If the HUD can be set to display the DTE-low fuel, clock and outside air temperature, the HUD is operating correctly at this time. The HUD was not set to display the DTE-low fuel, clock and outside air temperature. If the HUD cannot be set to display the DTE-low fuel, clock and outside air temperature, GO to Pinpoint Test A .

  4. F3 PERFORM THE HUD (HEAD UP DISPLAY) MODULE SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the HUD module self-test.

    • Check for recorded Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the HUD module self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart 
    No  GO to  F4

  5. F4 PERFORM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to the DTC Chart: IPC. REFER to: Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes .
    No  GO to  F5

  6. F5 CHECK FOR CORRECT HUD (HEAD UP DISPLAY) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect and inspect the HUD module connector.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the HUD module connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.

    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable service articles. TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA. If a service article exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions. If no service articles address this concern, INSTALL a new HUD module. REFER to: Head Up Display (HUD) Module .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
