Turbocharger LH: Removal

NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.

NOTE: Special attention needs to be given to the sealing ports for the oil feed, the oil drain, and the coolant tubes, on turbocharged engines. The sealing ports must be totally clean and free from O-ring residue, have no damage to the sealing surface and the tubes to ensure that there are no leaks or repeat repairs.

Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding 3.5L EcoBoost .
Remove the turbocharger oil return tube LH. Refer to: Turbocharger Oil Return Tube LH 3.5L EcoBoost .
If equipped, remove the engine front undershield. Refer to: Engine Front Undershield .
Disconnect the turbocharger wastegate electrical connector.

Remove and discard the left turbocharger exhaust flange nuts.

Remove the turbocharger coolant supply tube bolt, then disconnect the turbocharger coolant supply tube.

Release the fuel tubes from the retainers, then position the fuel tubes out of the way.

Remove the turbocharger coolant return tube bolt, then disconnect the turbocharger coolant return tube.

NOTE: Remove the coolant tubes with the turbocharger. If the 2 piece turbocharger cooling tubes are separated, then the rubber gasket must be replaced.

NOTE: Some models may be equipped with hex head bolts.

Remove the turbocharger retainers, then remove the turbocharger.

1. Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant supply and the turbocharger coolant return tube O-ring seals.

  : Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B
2. NOTE: Use brake cleaner and a nylon brush to clean. Do not use a metal brush, damage to sealing area will result in leaks.
  
  Clean the turbocharger coolant tubes sealing surfaces. Inspect the sealing surfaces for debris or damage and make sure the retaining bracket is not bent, check for squareness of the O-ring area. Install new components if necessary.

If needed, remove the turbocharger coolant tubes from the turbocharger. Refer to: Turbocharger Coolant Return Tube LH 3.5L EcoBoost . Refer to: Turbocharger Coolant Supply Tube LH 3.5L EcoBoost .
Remove and discard the turbocharger gasket.

If needed remove the turbocharger exhaust flange stud bolts and the turbocharger exhaust flange.
