Pinpoint Test A : The HUD (Head Up Display) Is Inoperative

  1. Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    See HUD Module component description. REFER to: Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes - Vehicles With: Head Up Display (HUD) .

    The HUD receives a hot at all times voltage from the BCM. The HUD receives the ignition status message for the RUN/START or ACC input from the BCM through the GWM over the HS-CAN3.

    Possible Sources 

    • Fuse
    • Communication concern
    • RH upper steering wheel switch
    • HUD calibration
    • GWM concern
    • SCCM concern
    • IPC concern
    • HUD module

    Visual Inspection and Pre-checks 

    • Verify the BCM fuse 29 (15A) is OK.

  2. A1 CHECK THE RH (RIGHT-HAND) UPPER STEERING WHEEL SWITCH SETTINGS BUTTON OPERATION

    • Ignition ON.

    • Press the RH upper steering wheel switch menu button.

    Does the message center menu display in the IPC? 

    Yes  GO to A2 
    No  DIAGNOSE the message center menu does not display. REFER to: Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes .
  3. A2 CHECK THE HUD (HEAD UP DISPLAY) OPERATION

    • Using the RH upper steering wheel switch, select the HUD on.

    Does the HUD appear on the windshield? 

    Yes  GO to A3 
    No  GO to A6 
  4. A3 CHECK THE GWM (GATEWAY MODULE A) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, check the GWM Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CM DTCs).

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to: Communications Network .
    No  GO to A4 
  5. A4 PERFORM THE IPC (INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the IPC self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to DTC Chart: IPC in this information. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart 
    No  GO to A5 
  6. A5 PERFORM THE SCCM (STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE) SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the SCCM self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to: Steering Wheel and Column Electrical Components .
    No  GO to A6 
  7. A6 PERFORM THE HUD (HEAD UP DISPLAY) MODULE SELF-TEST

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the HUD module self-test.

    • Check for recorded Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the HUD module self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) recorded? 

    Yes  REFER to DTC Chart: HUD Module in this information. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart 
    No  GO to A7 
  8. A7 PERFORM THE HUD (HEAD UP DISPLAY) MODULE CALIBRATION

    • Test the HUD operation.

    Did the calibration correct the inoperative HUD display? 

    Yes  The system is operating correctly. The concern was caused by the HUD being out of calibration.
    No  INSTALL a new HUD module. REFER to: Head Up Display (HUD) Module .
