Starter Motor: Removal

WARNING:
Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
NOTE:
Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
- Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect
- Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe RH side. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe RH 2.7L EcoBoost
- Loosen the clamps. Disconnect the electrical connector and pushpin. Remove the bolt and the CAC intake pipe from the right side.
Torque: Clamps: 48 lb.in (5.4 Nm) Bolt: 71 lb.in (8.0 Nm)
- Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe LH. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe LH 2.7L EcoBoost
- Detach the coolant hose from the starter motor bracket.
- Remove the starter motor bracket nuts and then remove the starter motor bracket.
Torque: 17 lb.ft (23 Nm)

- Remove the cover from solenoid.
- Remove the starter motor solenoid battery cable nut and then disconnect the starter motor solenoid battery cable.
Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)
- Remove the starter motor solenoid wire nut and then disconnect the starter solenoid wire.
Torque: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)
- Disconnect the selector lever cable from the transmission controller arm. Remove the bolt and position aside the selector lever assembly out of the way.
Torque: 62 lb.in (7 Nm)
- Remove the starter motor studbolts, then remove the starter motor.
Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)
- Inspect the starter motor drive gear and ring gear. Refer to: Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection 2.7L EcoBoost .
