High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: Do not loosen any fittings or plugs on the high-pressure fuel pump.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  3. Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  4. Remove the retainers and the underbody shield.

  5. Loosen the clamp.

    Torque: 42 lb.in (4.8 Nm)

  6. Release the clamps and disconnect the by-pass hose and the vacuum hose.

  7. Remove the bolt and position the lower RH air cleaner outlet pipe aside.

    Torque: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

  8. Loosen the CAC intake lower pipe RH clamp.

  9. Loosen the CAC intake upper pipe RH clamp.

    1. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
    2. Detach the retainer and position the EVAP canister purge valve tube aside.

  10. Detach the coolant hose from the starter motor bracket.

    1. Remove the bolt.
    2. Disconnect the bypass valve electrical connector and remove the CAC intake pipe RH.

  11. NOTE: When removing or installing the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator, spreading the openings will reduce the risk of damage.

    Remove the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator.

  12. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.

  13. NOTE: To release the fuel pressure in the high-pressure fuel tube, wrap the high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts with a shop towel to absorb any residual fuel pressure during the loosening of high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts.

    Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump-to-fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube flare nuts, then remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump-to-fuel rail high-pressure fuel tube.

  14. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel pump fuel feed tube quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

  15. NOTE: Alternately loosen the high-pressure fuel pump nuts one complete revolution at a time.

    Remove the high-pressure fuel pump nuts and then remove the high-pressure fuel pump.

  16. Remove and discard the high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal.

  17. Remove the high-pressure fuel pump tappet.

  18. Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump tappet. If any flat spots or scoring are found, especially in the indicated areas, then inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump tappet drive lobe. Install new components as needed.
