Removal And Installation: Turbocharger: Removal

NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
NOTE: Special attention needs to be given to the sealing ports for the oil feed, the oil drain, and the coolant lines, on turbocharged engines. The sealing ports must be totally clean and free from O-ring residue, have no damage to the sealing surface and the lines to ensure that there are no leaks or repeat repairs.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. Remove the Catalytic Converter. Refer to: Catalytic Converter 2.3L EcoBoost .
    • Remove the engine cover mounting stud.
    • Remove the turbocharger inlet pipe nut.
    • Loosen the clamps, then remove the turbocharger inlet pipe.

    1. Disconnect the quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling 2.3L EcoBoost .
  4. Loosen the clamps, then remove the nuts and the charge air cooler inlet tube.

  5. Remove the RH halfshaft. Refer to: Front Halfshaft RH .
  6. Remove the halfshaft support bracket bolts, then remove the halfshaft support bracket.

  7. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding 2.3L EcoBoost .
  8. Disconnect the turbocharger control hoses.. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  9. Remove the turbocharger coolant tube bolts, disconnect the hose, then remove the turbocharger coolant tubes.. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  10. Remove the turbocharger coolant tube clamp bolt, remove the turbocharger coolant tube clamp. Separate and discard the turbocharger coolant supply tube from the turbocharger coolant return tube.

    • Inspect the turbocharger tube and the sealing surfaces. Ensure that the retaining bracket is not bent, check for square-ness of the retaining bracket to the O-ring area. Use brake cleaner and a NYLON brush to clean. DO-NOT USE A METAL BRUSH; DAMAGE TO SEALING AREA WILL RESULT IN LEAKS.
    1. Remove and discard the turbocharger coolant tube O-ring seal.

  12. Remove the turbocharger oil return tube bolts, then remove and discard the turbocharger oil return tube.

  13. Remove the turbocharger oil supply tube retaining bolts, then remove and discard the turbocharger oil supply tube.

  14. Remove and discard the turbocharger oil supply filter.

  15. Remove and discard the upper turbocharger mounting nuts. Remove the lower turbocharger heat shield retaining bolt, then remove the turbocharger heat shield.

  16. Remove the lower turbocharger mounting nuts, then remove the turbocharger.

  17. Remove and discard the turbocharger gasket.

  18. If needed, remove the turbocharger mounting studs.
