Valve Cover: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
  2. NOTE: Do not pull the engine appearance cover forward or sideways to remove. Failure to press straight upward on the underside of the cover at the attachment points may result in damage to the cover or engine components.
    1. Place your hand under the engine appearance cover at each grommet location and push straight up to release each grommet from the studs.
    2. After all of the grommets have been released from the studs, remove the appearance cover from the engine.

  3. Remove the upper air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe 2.3L EcoBoost .
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the crankcase vent tube.

  5. Remove the retainers and the underbody shield.

    • Loosen the turbocharger inlet pipe clamp.
    • Remove the engine appearance cover stud.
    • Remove the bolt and the turbocharger inlet pipe.

  7. Remove the oil level indicator.

  8. Disconnect the MAPT sensor electrical connector.

  9. Remove the ignition coil-on-plugs. Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug 2.3L EcoBoost .
  10. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors and retainers as shown and position aside.

    • Disconnect the vacuum tubes at the brake vacuum pump.
    • Detach the turbocharger control valve from the valve cover and position aside.

  12. Detach the turbocharger control valve vacuum tube retainers and position aside.

  13. Loosen the fasteners and remove the valve cover.

  14. Discard the valve cover gasket.

  15. NOTE: The VCT solenoid seals should only be replaced if they are damaged.

    If necessary, using the special tools, remove the VCT seals. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle, 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer.
