Valve Cover: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

    Clean the valve cover.

    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Surface Prep Wipes / ZC-31-B

  2. NOTE: Installation of new seals is only required if damaged seals were removed during disassembly of the engine.

    If removed, using the special tools, install the VCT seals. Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) Handle, 303-1247 VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer.

  3. Install a new valve cover gasket.

  4. Apply a 5.5 mm bead of silicone sealant.

    Material: Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone / TA-357 (WSE-M4G323-A6)

  5. NOTE: The valve cover must be secured within 10 minutes of silicone gasket application. If the valve cover is not secured within 10 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface prep.

    Install the valve cover and tighten the fasteners in the sequence shown.

    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Surface Prep Wipes / ZC-31-B

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  6. Position the turbocharger control valve vacuum tubes and attach the retainers.

    • Position turbocharger control valve and attach to the valve cover.
    • Connect the vacuum tubes at the brake vacuum pump.

  8. Position the engine wiring harness and connect the electrical connectors and retainers as shown.

  9. Install the coil-on-plugs. Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug 2.3L EcoBoost .
  10. Connect the MAPT sensor electrical connector.

  11. Install the oil level indicator.

    1. Install the turbocharger inlet pipe, engine appearance cover stud and tighten clamp and stud.

      Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    2. Install the turbocharger inlet pipe bolt.

      Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  13. Install the underbody shield and the retainers.

  14. Install the crankcase vent tube and connect the electrical connector.

  15. Install the upper air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe 2.3L EcoBoost .
    1. NOTE: Lubricating the grommets with silicone grease will aid in the installation of the engine appearance cover, and any future removal and installation of the cover.

      Lubricate each grommet with silicone grease.

      Material: Motorcraft® Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound / XG-3-A (ESE-M1C171-A)

    2. Position the engine appearance cover onto engine with the grommets aligned with the studs.
    3. Press down on the engine appearance cover at each grommet location to attach the grommets onto the studs.
