Cooling Module: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Recover the A/C system. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) System Recovery, Evacuation and Charging .
  2. NOTE: Some vehicles are equipped with a grille shutter assembly framework only. These vehicles will not have a grille shutter actuator or a grille shutter linkage.

    Remove the active grill shutter. Refer to: Active Grille Shutter .

  3. Remove the air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner 2.0L EcoBoost .
    • Remove the A/C line fasteners and remove the fittings.

      Torque: 133 lb.in (15 Nm)

    • Discard the O-ring seals and gasket seals.

  5. Drain the cooling system. Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding 2.0L EcoBoost . Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding 2.3L EcoBoost  .
  6. NOTE: Do not pull the engine appearance cover forward or sideways to remove. Failure to press straight upward on the underside of the cover at the attachment points may result in damage to the cover or engine components.
    1. Place your hand under the engine appearance cover at each grommet location and push straight up to release each grommet from the studs.
    2. After all of the grommets have been released from the studs, remove the appearance cover from the engine.

  7. NOTE: Cover the generator to prevent coolant contamination of the generator.

    Completely cover the generator with waterproof plastic. Release the clamp and disconnect the lower radiator hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  8. NOTE: Vehicle with trailer tow shown, vehicles without trailer tow similar.
    1. Trailer tow vehicles only. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

  9. Release the clamp and disconnect the upper radiator hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  10. Depress the tabs and disconnect the coolant tube. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

  11. Remove the transmission cooler line support bracket bolt.

    Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  12. NOTE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.

    Loosen the clamp and disconnect the CAC tubes.

    Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  13. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  14. Detach the wiring harness retainer.

  16. Using an axle stand remove the bolts and lower the support. Use the General Equipment: Vehicle/Axle Stands

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  17. If necessary cut the adhesive between the foam strip and the transmission cooler. Use the General Equipment: Knife

  18. Position aside and secure to the cross beam.

  19. Remove the bolts and the cooling module.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (47 Nm)
