Starter Motor: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

WARNING: Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE: When removing any turbocharger air intake system components, make sure to cover any open ports to prevent debris from entering the system. The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. All components need to be inspected and cleaned prior to installation or reassembly.

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe LH. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe LH .
1. Detach and position the tube aside.
2. Loosen the clamps and remove the upper air cleaner outlet pipe.

Release the clamps and disconnect the tubes. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

Detach the coolant hose from the starter motor bracket.

1. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
2. Detach the retainer and position the EVAP canister purge valve tube aside.

1. Disconnect the bypass valve electrical connector.
2. Remove the bolt.
  Torque: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

Loosen the clamps, position the CAC tubes aside and remove the CAC intake pipe RH.
Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

Clean, inspect, and cover all open ports.
Disconnect the starter motor control wire electrical connector.

Open the starter motor battery cable cover.

Remove the nut and disconnect the starter motor battery cable.
Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

Detach the wire harness retainers from the starter motor bracket.

Disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever. Remove the bolt and position the selector lever assembly aside.
Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

NOTE: Make sure that when installing the manual control lever, it is fully seated onto the manual control lever shaft. Damage to the manual control lever shaft will occur and the manual lever will come loose.

NOTE: Make sure to hold the manual control lever while tightening the manual control lever nut or damage to the manual control lever and park components will occur.

Remove the nut and the manual control lever.

Torque: 159 lb.in (18 Nm)

Remove the nuts and the starter motor bracket.
Torque: 17 lb.ft (23 Nm)

Remove the nut and position the transmission fluid cooler tube aside.
Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

Remove the studbolts and the starter motor.
