Valve Cover - LH: Removal

NOTE:
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, may cause engine failure.

Remove the Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe. Refer to: Intake Air Distribution and Filtering .

Disconnect the PCV pressure sensor electric connector.
- 2.
Disconnect the PCV tube quick connect couplings and remove the PCV tube. Refer to: Fuel System General Information .

Disconnect the quick connect couplings and disconnect the turbocharger bypass tube. Refer to: Fuel System General Information .

Release the turbocharger inlet tube from the turbocharger inlet tube bracket grommet.

Loosen the turbocharger inlet tube clamp and remove the turbocharger inlet tube.

Release the turbocharger outlet tube from the retaining clamp and release the turbocharger outlet tube from the turbocharger outlet tube bracket grommet. Loosen the turbocharger outlet tube clamp and remove the turbocharger outlet tube.

Remove the fuel injection pump. Refer to: Fuel Charging and Controls 3.5L GTDI .

Remove the LH ignition coil-over-plugs. Refer to: Engine Ignition 3.5L GTDI .

- Disconnect the vapor tube from the intake manifold. Refer to: Fuel System General Information .
- Remove the stud bolt and position the EVAP purge solenoid and hoses aside.
- 14.
- Disconnect the LH Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoid electrical connectors.
- Detach the wiring harness retainers and position the harness aside.
- 15.NOTE: When removing the valve cover do not apply excessive force to the VCT oil control solenoid. If the VCT solenoid seal sticks to the VCT oil control solenoid carefully wiggle the valve cover until the seal breaks free. After the valve cover is removed, inspect and replace the VCT solenoids if damaged. The plastic electrical connector on the VCT solenoid will normally rotate approximately 12 degrees inside the steel housing.
Loosen the 4 valve cover bolts, 7 stud bolts and remove the valve cover.

Inspect the 2 VCT solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals.- Using the Differential Bearing Cone Installer and Handle, remove the seal(s).
- 18.
Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals.- Using the VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Handle, remove the seal(s).
- 19.NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation in Engine System General Information .
