PINPOINT TEST B : The Power Liftgate Is Inoperative From An Individual Power Liftgate Control Switch

NOTE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) from the Flex Probe Kit when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

  1. B1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE POWER LIFTGATE SWITCHES

    • NOTE: Make sure the power liftgate feature is ON (enabled) in the message center.

      Close the liftgate to the full closed position (manually if necessary).

    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
    • Activate the power liftgate from the front power liftgate control switch (instrument panel).
    • With the liftgate in the open position, activate the power liftgate from the rear power liftgate control switch (left rear quarter trim panel).
    • Activate the power liftgate from the liftgate exterior handle.

    Does the power liftgate open/close from at least one switch? 

    Yes  GO to  B2.
    No  GO to Pinpoint Test A .
  2. B2 CHECK FOR BCM DTC B12E8:11

    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the BCM self-test.

    Is BCM DTC B12E8:11 present? 

    Yes  GO to  B4.
    No  GO to  B3.
  3. B3 CHECK FOR LTM DTC B1105 AND B2703

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the LTM self-test.

    Is LTM DTC B1105 or B2703 present? 

    Yes  GO to  B4.
    No  For a front power liftgate control switch concern, GO to  B6.For a rear power liftgate control switch concern, GO to  B9.For an exterior liftgate release switch concern, GO to  B12.
  4. B4 CHECK FOR A STUCK CLOSED SWITCH

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Suspect liftgate control switch.
    • Ignition ON.
    • For a front or rear power liftgate control switch, using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the LTM self-test.
    • For the exterior liftgate release switch, using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the BCM self-test.

    Is BCM DTC B12E8:11 or LTM DTC B1105 or B2703 still present? 

    Yes  GO to  B5.
    No  INSTALL a new switch for the switch in question.
  5. B5 CHECK THE LIFTGATE CONTROL SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: LTM C4174B (DTC B1105 or B2703).
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280C (DTC B12E8:11).
    • For LTM DTC B2703, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • For LTM DTC B1105, measure:

    • For BCM DTC B12E8:11, measure:

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  For LTM DTC B1105 or B2703, GO to  B20.For BCM DTC B12E8:11, GO to  B21.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  6. B6 BYPASS THE FRONT POWER LIFTGATE CONTROL SWITCH

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Message Center Switch C253 (Expedition).
    • Disconnect: FCIM C2474B (Navigator).
    • Close the liftgate.
    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
    • For Expedition, connect:
      Lead 1 Measurement / Action Lead 2

    • For Navigator, connect:

    • Remove the fused jumper wire.

    Does the power liftgate open when the fused jumper wire is connected? 

    Yes  For Expedition, INSTALL a new message center switch. For Navigator, GO to  B19.
    No  GO to  B7.
  7. B7 CHECK THE FRONT POWER LIFTGATE CONTROL SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • For Expedition, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • For Navigator, measure:

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  B8.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. B8 CHECK THE FRONT POWER LIFTGATE CONTROL SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • For Expedition, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • For Navigator, measure:

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  B20.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  9. B9 BYPASS THE REAR POWER LIFTGATE CONTROL SWITCH

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Rear Power Liftgate Control Switch C4333 .
    • Open the liftgate.
    • Connect:
      Lead 1 Measurement / Action Lead 2

    • Remove the fused jumper wire.

    Does the power liftgate close when the fused jumper wire is connected? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new rear power liftgate control switch.
    No  GO to  B10.
  10. B10 CHECK THE REAR POWER LIFTGATE CONTROL SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  B11.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  11. B11 CHECK THE REAR POWER LIFTGATE CONTROL SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  B20.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  12. B12 CHECK THE BCM OUTPUT USING THE LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT STATUS (LFTGATE_R_OS) PID

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, active command the BCM PID LFTGATE_R_OS on.

    Does the power liftgate open or close? 

    Yes  GO to  B13.
    No  VERIFY the BCM fuse 25 (15A) is OK. If OK, GO to  B17. If not OK, REFER to the OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  13. B13 BYPASS THE EXTERIOR LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Liftgate Release Switch C4340 (Expedition).
    • Disconnect: Liftgate Applique C4352B (Navigator).
    • Close the liftgate.
    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
    • For Expedition, connect:
      Lead 1 Measurement / Action Lead 2

    • For Navigator, connect:

    • Remove the fused jumper wire.

    Does the power liftgate open when the fused jumper wire is connected? 

    Yes  For Expedition, INSTALL a new liftgate release switch. REFER to Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems . For Navigator, GO to  B14.
    No  GO to  B15.
  14. B14 CHECK THE LIFTGATE APPLIQUE HARNESS

    • Inspect the liftgate applique harness for opens and shorts.

    Is the liftgate applique harness OK? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new liftgate release switch. REFER to Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems .
    No  REPAIR or REPLACE the liftgate applique harness.
  15. B15 CHECK THE EXTERIOR LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • For Expedition, measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • For Navigator, measure:

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  B16.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  16. B16 CHECK THE EXTERIOR LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • For Expedition, measure:

    • For Navigator, measure:

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  B21.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  17. B17 CHECK THE BCM RELEASE OUTPUT AT THE LTM USING THE LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT STATUS (LFTGATE_R_OS) PID

    NOTE: The following step uses a test lamp to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only a Rotunda Test Lamp (SGT27000) or 250- 300mA incandescent bulb test lamp. To avoid connector terminal damage, use the Rotunda Flex Probe kit for the test lamp probe connection to the vehicle. Do not use the test lamp probe directly on any connector.

    • Ignition OFF.
    • NOTE: If the test lamp illuminates immediately when connected, repair the BCM liftgate release output for a short to voltage.

      Connect:

      Lead 1 Measurement / Action Lead 2

    • Ignition ON.
    • NOTE: The BCM only supplies voltage to the LTM momentarily. It is important to monitor the test lamp while activating the PID.

      Using a diagnostic scan tool, active command the BCM PID LFTGATE_R_OS on.

    Does the test lamp momentarily illuminate? 

    Yes  GO to  B20.
    No  GO to  B18.
  18. B18 CHECK THE BCM LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  B21.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  19. B19 CHECK FOR CORRECT FCIM OPERATION

    • Disconnect all the FCIM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion (install new connectors or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect all the FCIM connectors and make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new FCIM. REFER to Information and Entertainment Systems - Sony Audio System .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  20. B20 CHECK FOR CORRECT LTM OPERATION

    • Disconnect all the LTM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion (install new connectors or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect all the LTM connectors and make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new LTM. REFER to Liftgate/Trunk Module (LTM) .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  21. B21 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM OPERATION

    • Disconnect all the BCM connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion (install new connectors or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect all the BCM connectors and make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, BCM Hardware Testing .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
