Pinpoint Test G : The Windshield Washer Is Inoperative

  1. G1 CHECK THE AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE

    • Check the ambient air temperature.

    Is the ambient air temperature below freezing? 

    Yes  GO to  G2.
    No  GO to  G3.

  2. G2 CHECK THE WASHER SOLVENT

    • Check the washer solvent and make sure it is of the correct type to use for the temperature conditions present.

    Is the correct type of washer solvent present? 

    Yes  GO to  G3.
    No  ALLOW the vehicle to warm to room temperature. DRAIN and REFILL the windshield washer reservoir with the correct washer solvent type. INFORM the customer of the correct type of washer solvent to use for the temperature conditions present.

  3. G3 CHECK FOR WASHER SOLVENT TO THE WASHER JETS

    • Disconnect the washer hoses from the windshield washer jets and place them in a container to capture fluid.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Momentarily activate the windshield washer.

    Is washer fluid emitted at the washer hoses? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new washer jet in question.
    No  GO to  G4.

  4. G4 CHECK FOR WASHER MOTOR ACTIVATION

    • Connect the washer hoses to the windshield washer jets.
    • While listening for washer motor activation near the right front of the vehicle, have an assistant activate the windshield washer.

    Does the washer motor activate? 

    Yes  GO to  G5.
    No  GO to  G6.

  5. G5 CHECK FOR DAMAGED WASHER HOSES

    • Inspect the washer hoses for kinks or damage.

    Are the washer hoses OK? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new washer pump. REFER to Washer Pump - Expedition  or Washer Pump - Navigator  .
    No  REPAIR the washer hoses as necessary.

  6. G6 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH INPUT USING THE WASHER SWITCH (FRONT) (F_WASH_SW) PID

    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the SCCM PIDs.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, monitor the SCCM F_WASH_SW PID.
    • Activate the windshield washer using the wiper/washer switch.

    Does the PID indicate correctly when the windshield washer switch activated? 

    Yes  GO to  G7.
    No  INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to Steering Column Switches . If the concern is still present, INSTALL a new SCCM. REFER to Steering Column Switches .

  7. G7 CHECK THE REAR WASHER RELAY

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Rear Washer Relay.
    • Substitute a known good relay.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Check the operation of the windshield washer.

    Does the windshield washer operate? 

    Yes  REMOVE the known good relay. INSTALL a new rear washer relay.
    No  REMOVE the known good relay. GO to  G8.

  8. G8 CHECK THE REAR WASHER RELAY GROUND SUPPLIED CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Rear washer relay, cavity 4

      		 Ground

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  G9.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.

  9. G9 CHECK THE WASHER PUMP CIRCUIT TO THE REAR WASHER RELAY FOR AN OPEN

    NOTE: The following step uses a test lamp to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only a Rotunda Test Lamp (SGT27000) or 250- 300mA incandescent bulb test lamp. To avoid connector terminal damage, use the Rotunda Flex Probe kit for the test lamp probe connection to the vehicle. Do not use the test lamp probe directly on any connector.

    • Connect: Rear Washer Relay.
    • Disconnect: Washer Pump C137 .
    • Connect:
      Lead 1 Measurement / Action Lead 2
      Battery positive

    Does the test lamp illuminate? 

    Yes  GO to  G10.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.

  10. G10 CHECK THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR OUTPUT

    NOTE: The following step uses a test lamp to simulate normal circuit loads. Use only a Rotunda Test Lamp (SGT27000) or 250- 300mA incandescent bulb test lamp. To avoid connector terminal damage, use the Rotunda Flex Probe kit for the test lamp probe connection to the vehicle. Do not use the test lamp probe directly on any connector.

    • Connect:
      Lead 1 Measurement / Action Lead 2

      		 Ground
    • Ignition ON.
    • Activate the windshield washer using the wiper/washer switch.

    Does the test lamp illuminate when the windshield wash is requested from the wiper/washer switch? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new washer pump. REFER to Washer Pump - Expedition  .
    No  GO to  G11.

  11. G11 CHECK THE WASHER PUMP CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C1656 .
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. REFER to Wiper Motor - Windshield .
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
