Front Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly: Installation

1.

Position the shock absorber assembly.

NOTE: Align the index marks made during disassembly.

Compress the spring until the tension is released from the shock absorber. General Equipment: Spring Compressor.

NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent the shock rod from turning while installing the nut.

While holding the shock rod, install the new shock absorber and the shock rod nut.
- Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).

NOTE: If equipped with dynamic suspension, the RH and LH Continuous Controlled Damping (CCD) shock absorber assemblies are unique and cannot be used on opposite sides of the vehicle.

  Install the shock absorber and spring assembly.
- 2.
  
  Position the lower arm assembly up.

5.

Install the 3 new shock absorber and spring assembly upper nuts.
- Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).

Install the 2 new lower shock absorber nuts.
- Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).

7.

NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent the stud from turning while removing the nut.

Install the new stabilizer bar link upper nut.
- Tighten to 70 Nm (52 lb-ft).

8.

Position the wheel knuckle and install the new lower ball joint nut.
- Tighten to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft).

9.

Install the new upper ball joint nut.
- Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).

10.

Install the 3 IWE bolts.
- Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).

Connect the shock absorber and spring assembly wiring harness clips.

Position the height sensor arm bracket and install the height sensor arm bracket screw.
- Tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).

Position the brake hose and IWE vacuum hose bracket and install the bolt.
- Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).

Attach the tie rod end to the wheel knuckle and install the new tie rod end nut.
- Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).

NOTE: While placing wheel bearing and wheel hub into the wheel knuckle, hold the Constant Velocity (CV) outboard joint with outboard pressure to maintain spline engagement with the IWE actuator gear.

Using a hand vacuum pump apply and hold 24 inHg of vacuum to the IWE actuator through the large port on IWE to retract the actuator.

NOTE: Measure the depth of the CV shaft threaded end to the inner bearing race (shown in illustration). The minimum depth is 15.5 mm (0.61 in). If the depth is less than 15.5 mm (0.61 in) rotate the CV shaft to clear a binding condition between the IWE and CV splines. Installing the axle nut and tightening without the proper depth of protrusion will result in damage to the IWE.

Measure the CV shaft threaded end to the inner bearing race.

NOTE: Verify the spline engagement by checking for spline lash before installing the axle nut or component damage may occur.

NOTE: With vacuum still applied to IWE.

Install the new the axle nut.
- Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
- 2.
  
  Verify free rotation of the hub with no CV joint rotation. No clicking or grinding noise should be present.
- 3.
  
  Release vacuum and rotate bearing slightly to engage actuator (may hear single click when IWE system engages). Verify hub and CV joint rotate together.

NOTE: If the dust cap to bearing interface is damaged, damaged parts must be replaced.

20.

Position the wheel speed sensor wiring and install the bolt.
- Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).

21.

Install the brake disc. Refer to Front Disc Brake .

22.

NOTE: The wheel speed sensor electrical connector is located in the engine compartment secured to the fender apron.

Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
