High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Installation

  1. NOTE: The cam lobe for the high-pressure fuel pump must be at BDC for the high-pressure fuel pump installation.

    Remove the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet.

  2. Visual check. Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump tappet for flat spots or scoring, especially in the indicated areas. If any damage is found, inspect the high-pressure fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump tappet drive lobe. Install new components as necessary.

  3. NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft Clockwise (CW) or damage to the engine may occur.

    Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft Clockwise (CW) until the high-pressure fuel pump cam lobe is at BDC.

  4. NOTE: Apply clean motor oil to the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet and to the high-pressure fuel pump cover bore.

    Install the high-pressure fuel pump roller tappet.

    Material

    : Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W20-QSP (WSS-M2C945-A)

  5. NOTE: Apply clean motor oil to the high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal.

    Install a new high-pressure fuel pump O-ring seal onto the high-pressure fuel pump.

    Material

    : Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W20-QSP (WSS-M2C945-A)

  6. Install the high-pressure fuel pump and loosely install 2 new high-pressure fuel pump bolts, alternately tighten each bolt one complete revolution until seated. Tighten the 2 high-pressure fuel pump bolts in the following 2 stages.

    Torque

    :Stage 1: 177 lb.in (20 Nm) Stage 2: 45°

  7. Install the following items:

    1. Position a new high-pressure fuel tube and hand start the 2 flare nuts in the following order.
    2. Hand tighten the high pressure fuel tube-to-fuel rail flare nut.
    3. Hand tighten the high pressure fuel tube-to-high-pressure fuel pump flare nut.
    4. Loosely install the high pressure fuel tube bracket bolts.
    5. NOTE: Calculate the correct torque wrench setting for the following torque using the Torque Wrench Adapter Formulas.

      Tighten the high pressure fuel tube-to-fuel rail flare nut in the following 2 stages.

      Torque

      :Stage 1: 133 lb.in (15 Nm) Stage 2: 45°

    6. NOTE: Calculate the correct torque wrench setting for the following torque using the Torque Wrench Adapter Formulas.

      Tighten the high pressure fuel tube-to-high-pressure fuel pump flare nut in the following 2 stages.

      Torque

      :Stage 1: 133 lb.in (15 Nm) Stage 2: 45°

    7. Tighten the high-pressure fuel tube bracket bolts.

      Torque

      : 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  8. Connect the fuel jumper tube-to-high-pressure fuel pump quick connect coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
  9. Connect the high-pressure fuel pump electrical connector.
  10. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
  11. Reconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
  12. Pressurize the fuel system. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
  13. Install the high-pressure fuel pump noise insulator shield.
