Steering Column: Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. Remove the SASM. Refer to: Steering Angle Sensor Module (SASM) .
  2. Remove the driver knee airbag. Refer to: Driver Knee Airbag .
  3. Remove the retainers and the steering column opening trim panel.

    • Disconnect and position aside the air sensor.

  4. WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

    Remove and discard the steering column shaft coupler bolt and separate the coupler from the steering shaft.

    Torque

    : 21 lb.ft (28 Nm)

    Vehicles with keyless entry 

  5. Remove the retainers and disconnect the steering column electrical connectors.

  6. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
    NOTE: If equipped with steering column lock module.

    On both sides. Loosen the retainers. Use the General Equipment: Center Punch

    NOTE: If equipped with steering column lock module.

    On both sides. Remove the retainers and the steering column lock module.

    Vehicles without keyless entry 

  8. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    If equipped. Remove the ignition lock cylinder cover.

  9. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

    Loosen the ignition lock cylinder housing retainer. Use the General Equipment: Center Punch

    Remove the ignition lock cylinder housing retainer.

    All vehicles 

  12. Disconnect the electrical connector at the back of the steering column.

  13. Remove and discard the steering column retainers and remove the steering column.

    Torque

    : 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
