Selectable Driving Modes

Certain vehicles equipped with a 2.3L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engine are also equipped with a Drive Mode switch. The Drive Mode switch allows the driver to select between 4 driving modes. Each mode has preset system settings to optimize EPAS, AWD, powertrain response, suspension and ESC. The switch is hardwired to the GFM2, pressing the switch sends a ground signal to the GFM2. The module responds by adjusting the voltage output to the damper valve solenoids and sending a message to the PCM, PSCM, ABS module and AWD relay module. These modules respond to the message by modifying their operation according to a programmed set of instructions. The Drive Mode switch overrides any other steering, suspension or braking mode selection.

Normal
: System default when the vehicle is started. Vehicle management settings tuned for street driving.
Sport
: Vehicle settings tuned for performance street driving.
Track
: This mode is for track use only. Vehicle settings are tuned for aggressive driving while at race circuits or autocrosses.
Drift
: This mode is for track use only. Vehicle settings are tuned for spirited and aggressive driving.

Component Description

EPAS Steering Gear

The EPAS gear is an assembly consisting of a PSCM, a motor, a steering shaft torque sensor and EPAS gear isolators, all of which are serviced as an assembly. The inner and outer tie rods and the gear bellows boots are available separately for service.

The steering shaft torque sensor is mounted near the input shaft of the EPAS gear and provides the PSCM with how much force is being used to turn the steering wheel.
The EPAS gear has one inner tie rod located at each end of the gear assembly and is available separately for service.
The EPAS gear has one outer tie rod located at each end of the gear assembly and is available separately for service.
The EPAS gear has one convoluted rubber bellows boot located at each side of the EPAS gear assembly. A rubber sealing strap is located between each boot and the housing. Each boot is held in place with 2 boot clamps. A bellows boot kit is available for service and includes a rubber sealing strap, the bellows boot and 2 boot clamps.
The EPAS gear has isolators located at each attachment point of the gear. These isolators (2 rubber and 1 steel) aid in the reduction of NVH concerns and are not available separately for service.

PSCM

The PSCM is the ECU for the EPAS system. The module monitors all sensor inputs and HS-CAN messages relating to the EPAS system and directly controls the output of the EPAS motor.
