Rear Halfshaft: Installation

  1. Install the rear halfshaft seal. Refer to: Rear Halfshaft Seal .
    1. NOTE: Make sure that a new component is installed.

      Install a new inner halfshaft circlip.

    2. NOTE: The seal is to be reused unless damaged.

      Material

      : Motorcraft® High Temperature 4x4 Front Axle and Wheel Bearing Grease / XG-11 (WSS-M1C267-A1)

  2. NOTE: The outer constant velocity (CV) joint must not be bent more than 45°.
    NOTE: The inner constant velocity (CV) joint must not be bent more than 18°.
    NOTE: Take extra care not to damage the seal.

    1. NOTE: Make sure that the component is correctly installed.

      Install the halfshaft until the halfshaft circlip is fully seated.

    2. Hold the rear halfshaft by using C-clamp.

  3. NOTE: Fabricate a spacer.

    Measure the length as per the specification.

  4. Support the rear suspension and position the correct spacer. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

    1. Install the trailing arm and knuckle assembly as a unit, tighten the new front bolts.

      Torque

      : 129 lb.ft (175 Nm)

    2. NOTE: Finger tight at this stage.

      Install the new trailing arm-to-lower arm bolt and nut.

  5. Position the front lower arm and brake hoses and bracket and tighten the bolts.

    Torque

    : 85 lb.ft (115 Nm)

  6. Position the wiring harness and install the pin type retainers.

  7. Connect the wiring harness electrical connector and install the retainer.

  8. Position the parking brake cable and install the bolt.

    Torque

    : 17 lb.in (1.9 Nm)

  9. Install the underbody shield and install the bolts.

  10. NOTE: Make sure that new bolt is installed.

    Install the lower shock absorber with bolt.

    Torque

    : 85 lb.ft (115 Nm)

  11. NOTE: Make sure that new nut is installed.

    Install the stabilizer bar with nut.

    Torque

    : 76 lb.ft (103 Nm)

  12. Install the spring. Refer to: Spring .
  13. Remove the General Equipment: Transmission Jack
  14. NOTE: Make sure a new bolt is installed.
    NOTE: Only tighten the bolt finger tight at this stage.

    Install the new wheel hub mounting bolt.

  15. Install the rear wheel speed sensor. Refer to: Rear Wheel Speed Sensor - RS .
  16. Install the wiring harness and retainer.

  17. Install the brake disc. Refer to: Brake Disc - RS .
  18. NOTE: Apply the brake to keep the halfshaft from rotating.

    Tighten the wheel hub mounting bolt.

    Torque

    : 37 lb.ft (50 Nm)

  19. Install the wheel and tire. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
