Starter Motor: Removal

WARNING: Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE: When removing any turbocharger air intake system components, make sure to cover any open ports to prevent debris from entering the system. The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. All components need to be inspected and cleaned prior to installation or reassembly.

All vehicles

With the vehicle in N, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .
Disconnect the battery. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
NOTE: Do not pull the engine appearance cover forward or sideways to remove. Failure to press straight upward on the underside of the cover at the attachment points may result in damage to the cover or engine components.
1. Place your hand under the engine appearance cover at each grommet location and push straight up to release each grommet from the studs.
2. After all of the grommets have been released from the studs, remove the appearance cover from the engine.

Release the fastener and remove the air cleaner inlet tube.

Disconnect the quick release couplings and position the tubes aside. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .

1. Disconnect the quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
2. Detach the retainers and position the tubes aside.

If equipped. Remove the underbody shield retainers and the underbody shield.

Loosen the clamp, disconnect and position the CAC outlet pipe aside.
Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

Clean, inspect, and cover all open ports.
With start/stop
1. Disconnect the cabin heater coolant pump electrical connector.
2. Remove the nuts and position the cabin heater coolant pump aside.
  Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

Without start/stop
Detach the retainer and position the tube aside.

All vehicles
Detach the wiring harness retainers and position the wiring harnesses aside.

Remove the nuts and the starter motor bracket.
Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

1. Remove the starter motor control wire retaining nut and disconnect the starter motor control wire at the starter motor.
  Torque: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)
2. Remove the battery positive cable retaining nut and disconnect the battery positive cable at the starter motor.
  Torque: 106 lb.in (12 Nm)

Remove the studbolts and the starter motor.
Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

Inspect the starter motor drive gear and the flexplate or flywheel ring gear. Refer to: Starter Motor Drive Gear and Flywheel Ring Gear Inspection .
