Valve cover: Removal

NOTE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
  1. With the vehicle in neutral, position it on a hoist. refer to: Jacking and lifting - overview .
  2. Remove the upper air cleaner outlet pipe. refer to: Air cleaner outlet pipe .
  3. Remove the oil level indicator.

  4. Disconnect the crankcase pressure sensor electrical connector and remove the crankcase vent tube.

  5. Remove the retainers and underbody shield.

    • Release the clamp and disconnect the CAC bypass hose. Use the general equipment: hose clamp remover/installer

    • Loosen the turbocharger inlet pipe clamp.

    • Remove the engine appearance cover stud.

    • Remove the bolt and the turbocharger inlet pipe.

  7. Remove the ignition coil-on-plugs. refer to: Ignition coil-on-plug .
  8. Disconnect the MAPT sensor electrical connector.

    • Disconnect the VCT oil control solenoid electrical connectors.

    • Disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connectors.

    • Detach the wiring harness retainers and position the harness aside.

  10. Remove the bolt and the exhaust CMP sensor.

  11. Disconnect the vacuum tubes at the brake vacuum pump.

    • Detach the CHT wiring harness retainer.

    • Detach the turbocharger control valve vacuum tube retainers and position aside.

  13. Loosen the fasteners and remove the valve cover.

  14. Remove and discard the valve cover gasket.

  15. NOTE: The VCT solenoid seals should only be replaced if they are damaged.

    Inspect the VCT oil control solenoid seals for damaged. Use special service tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) handle. 303-1247 VCT spark plug tube seal remover and installer.

  16. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.

  17. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

    Make sure that the mating faces are clean and free of foreign material.
