Section 1206 (Engine - 2.3L ECOBOOST (201KW/273PS)): Removal: Engine

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview .

NOTE: Do not pull the engine appearance cover forward or sideways to remove. Failure to press straight upward on the underside of the cover at the attachment points may result in damage to the cover or engine components.
- Place your hand under the engine appearance cover at each grommet location and push straight up to release each grommet from the studs.
- After all of the grommets have been released from the studs, remove the appearance cover from the engine.
- Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release .
- Disconnect both battery cables. Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect .
- Recover the A/C system. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) System Recovery, Evacuation and Charging .
- Remove the retainers and the underbody shields.
- Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to: Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding .
- Remove the engine compartment fuse box cover.
- Install the steering wheel holder. Use the General Equipment: Steering Wheel Holder
- Remove and discard the steering column coupling-to-steering gear bolt.
- If equipped with block heater, detach the retainers.
- Remove the following items:
- Remove the air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
- Remove the upper air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .
- Disconnect the main wiring harness from the fuse box and detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Remove the nuts and the battery feed cables.
- Remove the battery tray. Refer to: Battery Tray .
- Remove the nut and cable from the positive battery cable.
- Disconnect and detach the wiring harness connector from the air cleaner support bracket.
- Detach the wiring harness retainer and remove the nuts and the air cleaner support bracket.
- Remove the bolt and wiring harness retainer for the EPAS wiring harness.
- Remove the bolt and the wiring harness retainer from the LH frame rail.
- Disconnect the brake vacuum pump quick release coupling and retainer.

- Disconnect the fuel hose spring lock coupling. Refer to: Spring Lock Couplings .
- Disconnect the fuel pressure sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve quick release coupling. Refer to: Quick Release Coupling .
- Disconnect the coolant hoses. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Disconnect the upper radiator hose and retainer. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Remove the degas bottle. Refer to: Degas Bottle .
- Remove the TRCM bracket nut.
- Remove the bolts and position the TRCM aside.
- Remove the nut and the TRCM bracket.
- Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer

- Rotate the heater hose tabs.
- Disconnect the heater hoses.
- Remove the bolts and disconnect the transmission shift cable and position aside.
- Remove the nut and line nuts for the transmission cooling block and position aside.
- Remove the front wheels and tires. Refer to: Wheel and Tire .
- Loosen the clamps and remove the nuts and the CAC inlet tube.
- Loosen the clamps and remove the CAC outlet tube.

NOTE: Discard the O-ring seals and gaskets.
Remove the bolt, nuts and wire harness retainers and position the A/C lines aside.

- Remove the oil pan drain bolt and drain the engine oil. Use the General Equipment: Oil Drain Equipment
- Install the oil pan drain bolt.
Torque: 20 lb.ft (27 Nm)
- Remove and discard the engine oil filter.
- Remove the bolt and disconnect the ground cable retainer and position aside.
- If equipped, remove the retainers and the underbody side panels.
- Remove the bolts, nuts and the body brace.
- If equipped, disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensor electrical connector and the retainers.
- If equipped, disconnect the exhaust pressure sensor hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Remove and discard the exhaust nuts and position exhaust rearward.

NOTE: Clean the catalytic converter-to-muffler sealing surfaces.
Remove and discard the muffler inlet pipe gasket.
- Remove the bolts, brackets from the front of the driveshaft and discard the bolts.

- Index-mark the front of the driveshaft.
- Using a hammer and a punch, separate the driveshaft.
- Position the driveshaft aside and support.
- Loosen the PTU bolts 5 mm (0.197).
- Remove the oil pan-to-transmission bolt.

NOTE: One of these bolts will be used to mount the Adjustable Mounting Arm to the powertrain.
Remove the oil pan-to-transmission bolt.

NOTE: Mark the position of the bracket for reference during installation.
Remove the nuts, studs and catalytic converter support bracket.

NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Disconnect the front wheel speed sensor.
-
NOTE: Use the internal or external hex-holding feature to prevent the ball and stud from turning while removing or installing the stabilizer bar link nuts. The link boot seal must not be allowed to twist while tightening the link nuts or damage to the boot seal will occur.NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Remove the nut and position the front stabilizer bar link aside.
- Remove the front brake discs. Refer to: Brake Disc .

NOTE: The struts will need to slide out of the knuckles when the powertrain and subframe assembly is lowered.NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Remove the bolt from the wheel knuckle.
- Remove the retainers and position the fender splash shield aside.

NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
- Remove the bolt and position height sensor bracket aside.
- Disconnect the height sensor electrical connector and the wire retainers.

NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.
Remove the nuts, bolts and subframe support frame and height sensor.
- Remove the screws and the PCM housing cover.
- Detach the wiring harness grommet.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the PCM.
-
- Remove the bolts and the PCM housing.
- Detach the wiring harness retainer.
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector.

NOTE: Front bumper cover removed for clarity.
Disconnect the turbocharger boost pressure and charge air temperature sensor electrical connector.
- Position a 2 x 6 board, 30 in (762 mm) in length and one 1 x 6 board 30 in (762 mm) in length onto the Special tool. Install Special Service Tool: 300-OTC 1585AE Powertrain Lift. Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block
- Position the powertrain lift table with the boards under the engine and transmission.
- Install the adjustable mounting arm and the bolts. Use the General Equipment: Adjustable Mounting Arm
- Remove the nuts, stud bolts and the engine mount.
- Remove the bolt and the transmission support insulator.

- Remove the bolts and the rear subframe support brackets.
- Discard the 2 bolts.
- Remove the front subframe bolts.
-
NOTE: Make sure the struts slide out of the knuckles when lowered.NOTE: Make sure the transmission cooler tubes are free and clear when lowered.
Using the powertrain lift, lower the powertrain and subframe assembly.
- Disconnect the HO2S and catalyst monitor sensor electrical connectors.
- Remove the bolts for the catalytic converter support bracket.
- Remove the nuts and the catalytic converter and discard the nuts.

NOTE: Clean the catalytic converter-to-turbocharger sealing surfaces.
Remove and discard the catalytic converter gasket.
- Detach the coolant hose retainer from the starter motor stud bolt and the wiring harness retainers from the starter motor bracket.
- Remove the nuts and the starter motor bracket.
- Remove the starter motor electrical housing nuts and position harness aside.
- Remove the stud bolts and the starter motor.
- Remove the starter motor insulator.

NOTE: Only rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction.NOTE: Index mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.
Index-mark and remove the 4 torque converter nuts and discard. Use the General Equipment: Magnetic Socket
- Disconnect the upper radiator hose. Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp Remover/Installer
- Detach the PTU vent hose retainer.
- Disconnect the transmission electrical connectors and the wiring harness retainers.
- Detach the wiring harness retainers.
- Remove the RH halfshaft bearing bracket bolts.
- Remove the bolts and the PTU heat shield.
- Remove the bolts and the PTU support bracket.
- Loosen the PTU bolts. 5 mm (0.019). Position the PTU aside.
- Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the crankcase vent tube.

- Loosen the turbocharger inlet pipe clamp.
- Remove the engine appearance cover stud.
- Remove the bolt and the turbocharger inlet pipe.
- Install the spreader bar and floor crane. Use Special Service Tool: 300-OTC1819E 2, 200# Floor Crane, Fold Away.
- Remove the bolts and the adjustable mounting arm. Use the General Equipment: Adjustable Mounting Arm
- Remove the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Remove the transmission-to-engine bolt and remove the engine from the transmission.
- Install Special Service Tool: 307-566 Retainer, Torque Converter.
