Oil Pan: Installation

  1. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove traces of sealant.

    Clean the oil pan sealing surface. Use the General Equipment: Plastic Scraper

  2. NOTE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove traces of sealant.

  4. NOTE: If the oil pan is not secured within 10 minutes of sealant application, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface prep. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or 10 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

    Apply a 3 mm bead of silicone sealant.

    Material: Motorcraft ® Silicone Gasket and Sealant / TA-30 (WSE-M4G323-A4)

  5. Install the oil pan and the bolts finger-tight.

  6. NOTE: The engine front cover-to-oil pan fasteners must be tightened first to align the front surface of the oil pan flush with the front surface of the engine block.

    Install the engine front cover-to-oil pan bolts.

    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

  7. Tighten the bolts in sequence shown.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  8. Alternate tightening the LH transmission-to-engine and RH engine-to-transmission lower bolts to draw the transaxle and engine together.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  9. Tighten the engine-to-transmission bolt.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  10. Install the oil pan-to-transmission bolt.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  11. Install the oil pan-to-transmission bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  12. Tighten the transmission-to-engine bolt.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  13. Lubricate the oil filter seal with clean engine oil and install.

    Material: Motorcraft ® SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W30-QSP (WSS-M2C946-A)

    Torque:

    Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

    Stage 2: 180 °

  14. Install the transfer case. Refer to: Transfer Case .
    1. Position the A/C compressor and install the stud.

      Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

    2. Install the A/C compressor bolts and nut.

      Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    3. Install the A/C compressor line bracket bolt.

      Torque: 177 lb.in (20 Nm)

    • Connect the electrical connectors and wiring retainer.

    1. Position the engine roll restrictor.
    2. Clean the bolts and apply thread locking sealant and install the engine roll restrictor bolts.

      Material: Motorcraft ® Threadlock and Sealer / TA-25-B

      Torque: 92 lb.ft (125 Nm)

  17. Install the CAC outlet tube and tighten the clamps.

    Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    1. Install the CAC inlet tube and the nuts.

      Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

    2. Tighten the clamps.

      Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  19. Install the A/C compressor belt. Refer to: Air Conditioning (A/C) Compressor Belt .
  20. Install the underbody shields and the retainers.

  21. Tighten the transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  22. Install the following items:

    1. Install the air cleaner. Refer to: Air Cleaner .
    2. Install the upper air cleaner outlet pipe. Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe .

  23. Install the oil indicator.

    1. NOTE: Lubricating the grommets with silicone grease will aid in the installation of the engine appearance cover, and any future removal and installation of the cover.

      Lubricate each grommet with silicone grease.

      Material: Motorcraft ® Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound / XG-3-A (ESE-M1C171-A)

    2. Position the engine appearance cover onto engine with the grommets aligned with the studs.
    3. Press down on the engine appearance cover at each grommet location to attach the grommets onto the studs.

  25. Fill the engine with clean engine oil. Refer to: Specifications .

    Material: Motorcraft ® SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil / XO-5W30-QSP (WSS-M2C946-A)
