Removal And Installation: Transmission: Installation

  1. Install the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-566 Retainer, Torque Converter.

  2. Lubricate the torque converter pilot hub with Multi-Purpose Grease.

    Material: Motorcraft ® Multi-Purpose Grease Spray / XL-5-A (ESB-M1C93-B)

  3. NOTE: If the transmission is not positioned on the dowel pins, damage to the transmission may occur.

    If the dowel pins were pulled out of the engine block during removal, install new dowel pins in the engine block.

  4. NOTE: Secure the transmission to the transmission jack with a safety strap.

    Support the transmission with a transmission jack. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack

  5. Position the transmission behind the engine and remove the special tool. Use Special Service Tool: 307-566 Retainer, Torque Converter.

  6. Align the index-mark made during removal.

  7. Install the LH and the RH transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  8. Install the lower transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  9. NOTE: Only rotate the engine in a clockwise direction or engine damage will occur.

    Using a magnetic socket install the new torque converter nuts. Use the General Equipment: Magnetic Socket

    Torque: 30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

  10. Install the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  11. Install the transmission support insulator bracket and the bolts.

    Torque: 46 lb.ft (63 Nm)

  12. NOTE: Clean the transmission support insulator bolt using a wire brush and apply Motorcraft ® Threadlock and Sealer to the threads.

    Install the transmission support insulator and the bolt.

    Material: Motorcraft ® Threadlock and Sealer / TA-25-B

    Torque: 109 lb.ft (148 Nm)

  13. Install the transmission fluid cooler tubes on the front cover studbolt and install the nut.

  14. If removed, inspect the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube backing rings and seals for damage and install new backing rings or seals if necessary.

    1. Backing ring (7J324)
    2. Seal (7D285)

      Material: Motorcraft ® MERCON ® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (MERCON ® LV) (WSS-M2C938-A)

  15. Install the transmission fluid cooler tubes and new bolts.

    Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)

  16. Install the transmission fluid heater (if equipped) and thermal bypass valve bracket bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  17. Connect the wiring harness and the upper coolant hose retainers.

  18. Install the selector lever cable bracket and the bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  19. Install the battery tray support bracket and nuts and connect the cable retainer.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  22. Install the catalytic converter support bracket and the bolts.

    1. Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
    2. Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

  23. Connect the transmission electrical connectors and the wiring harness retainers.

  24. Install the ground cable bolt and the retainer.

    Torque: 35 lb.ft (48 Nm)

    All wheel drive (AWD) 

  25. Install the transfer case assembly. REFER to: Transfer Case .

    Vehicles with front wheel drive (FWD) 

    1. Inspect the halfshaft seal surface.
    2. Inspect the dust shield.
    3. Inspect the differential side gear splines.

  26. NOTE: If the transmission has been replaced or overhauled, the halfshaft seals do not need to be replaced.

    If necessary, install a new RH halfshaft seal. REFER to: Halfshaft Seal RH - FWD .

  27. NOTE: Do not fully install the shaft at this time.

    Install the halfshaft through the seal protector. Using part: 4W1W-4N206-A

  28. NOTE: Insert the intermediate shaft until the intermediate shaft bearing is centered in the concave groove of the intermediate shaft bearing bracket.

    Remove the seal protector and insert the halfshaft until the intermediate shaft bearing is centered in the intermediate shaft bracket.

  29. Install the new halfshaft retaining strap and the 2 new halfshaft retaining strap nuts.

    Torque:

    Stage 1: Tighten upper nut to :: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

    Stage 2: Tighten lower nut to :: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    Stage 3: Tighten upper nut to :: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

  30. Install the RH brake hose bolt.

    Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  31. Insert the lower ball joint into the wheel knuckle and install a new bolt and nut.

    Torque: 61 lb.ft (83 Nm)

  32. Connect the RH tie rod end to the knuckle and install the new nut.

  33. If equipped, position back the height sensor and install the height sensor bolt.

  34. NOTE: If the transmission has been replaced or overhauled, the halfshaft seals do not need to be replaced.

    Install the LH halfshaft assembly. REFER to: Front Halfshaft LH .

  35. Install the starter insulator.

  37. Inspect and replace the oil filter adapter gasket if damaged.

  38. Install the oil filter adapter and the bolts.

    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    Stage 1: 71 lb.in (8 Nm)

    Stage 2: 180 °

    Auto-Start-Stop 

  41. Connect the transmission fluid auxiliary pump electrical connector.

  42. Install the front support bar and the bolts.

    1. Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
    2. Torque: 124 lb.in (14 Nm)

  43. If equipped, install the bolt and connect the electrical connector and the wiring harness retainers.

    Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

  44. Install the CAC tube and nuts. Tighten the CAC tube clamps.

    1. Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)
    2. Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  46. Install the wheels and tires. REFER to: Wheel and Tire .
  47. Install the battery tray. REFER to: Battery Tray .
  48. Adjust the selector lever cable. REFER to: Selector Lever Cable Adjustment .
  49. Install the upper air cleaner outlet pipe Refer to: Air Cleaner Outlet Pipe 2.0L EcoBoost (177kW/240PS) - MI4 .
  50. Inspect and adjust the engine oil level.

    Material: Motorcraft ® SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil / XO-5W30-QFS (WSS-M2C946-A)

  51. NOTE: The following fluid amounts listed below are for initial fill only. The transmission fluid must be even with the oil leveling plug hole and the transmission must be at normal operating temperature 85-93 °C (185-200 °F) or transmission damage can occur.

    1. Transmission overhaul (includes main control and torque converter drain)

      Volume

      : 6.34qt (6L)

    2. Main control overhaul or replace (with out transmission overhaul)

      Volume

      : 5.28qt (5L)

    3. Transmission draining and filling (for engine and halfshaft related repairs)

      Volume

      : 4.23qt (4L)

    • Material: Motorcraft ® MERCON ® LV Automatic Transmission Fluid / XT-10-QLVC (MERCON ® LV) (WSS-M2C938-A)

  52. Start the engine and slowly select each gear, stopping in each position and allowing the transmission to engage.
  53. With the vehicle on a level hoist, the engine running in PARK, remove the oil leveling plug and allow the transmission fluid to drain until its even with the oil leveling plug hole. If the transmission fluid does not drain from the oil leveling plug hole add transmission fluid in increments of. 25 L (0.264 qt) until the transmission fluid is even with the oil leveling plug hole. Install the oil leveling plug.

    Torque: 26 lb.ft (35 Nm)

  54. With the clamp facing the front of the vehicle, compress the constant tension clamp and install the transmission vent on the fill tube.

  55. NOTE: Only download the solenoid strategy at this time. The Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle will be completed later in this procedure.

    If a new solenoid body is installed, the solenoid body strategy must be updated. REFER to: Transmission Strategy Download .

    Auto-Start-Stop 

  56. NOTE: TFT must be greater than 38 °C (100 °F) for the PCM to command the pump on.

    Using the scan tool verify the TFT is above 38 °C (100 °F).

    • If TFT is below 38 °C (100 °F), run engine at 3000 RPM until specified temperature is achieved (approximately 2-4 minutes).

  57. Prime the Transmission Fluid Auxiliary Pump.

    1. Key ON, Engine OFF.
    2. Using the scan tool, command TRANS_PMP_CMD to 80% for 30 seconds. If the pump cannot be commanded on, verify TFT is above 38 °C (100 °F).
    3. Clear DTCs.

  58. Carry out a road test until there is a stop / start event. If the restart is harsh, repeat the Transmission Fluid Pump prime procedure.
  59. Continue road test and evaluate each stop / start event. Repeat prime procedure until three consecutive normal stop / start events are achieved.

    All vehicles 

  60. Using a scan tool, drive the vehicle until the transmission is at normal operating temperature 85-93 °C (185-200 °F).
  61. After completing the repairs perform the Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction procedure.
  62. If a new solenoid body is installed, complete the Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle. REFER to: Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle .
  63. Check the transmission fluid level. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Level Check .
