Fuel System - Overview
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 Lincoln MKC. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Overview
The fuel system consists of:
- Fuel, vapor and brake tubes in an integrated bundle assembly.
- A single container (L-shaped) fuel tank.
- Quick connect fuel and vapor tube couplings.
- A fuel tank filler pipe assembly, which cannot be modified in any way, that also contains a restrictor plate to permit only unleaded fuel to be pumped into the tank.
- An Easy Fuel™ (capless) fuel tank filler pipe assembly, which cannot be modified in any way and is serviced only by the installation of a new fuel tank filler pipe assembly.
- A supplemental refueling adapter located in the luggage compartment.
- A Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM).
- A Closed Loop Pressure Control (CLPC) system, which consists of an mechanical returnless fuel system (MRFS) that uses a Low Fuel Pressure Sensor (FPS) mounted directly to the liquid fuel line in addition to a High Fuel Pressure Sensor. The Low Fuel Pressure Sensor provides the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) a fuel pressure reading between the Fuel Pump Module and the High Pressure (HP) Pump. (low side) This allows the PCM to calculate the fuel volume/pressure demand from the Fuel Pump Module more precisely to prevent over-running of the fuel pump. (a fuel economy benefit).
- A Fuel Pump (FP) module containing:
- The electric FP module which provides pressurized fuel to the high pressure Fuel Pump (FP).
- The fuel level sensor.
- A check valve which maintains system pressure after the pump is shut off.
- A pressure relief for overpressure protection in the event of restricted fluid flow.
- A lifetime fuel filter providing filtration to protect the fuel injectors from foreign material.
Fuel Pump Shut-off Feature
In the event of a moderate to severe collision, the vehicle is equipped with a Fuel Pump and Sender Shut-off Feature that is initiated by the event notification signal.
