The base IPC provides a single 2.3" LCD display screen. The optional mid-level IPC provides a single 4.2" LCD display screen. The optional high-level IPC provides dual RH and LH LCD screens. The single display screen clusters and the LH display screen (high-level IPC) contain the conventional message center information. The RH display screen (high-level IPC) displays multimedia information (audio, phone and navigation) as well as items such as vehicle direction and time. For information on the RH display screen, Refer to the appropriate article for the procedure.
Informational Indicators/Warning Indicators
Informational indicators provide information to the driver of conditions that exist in the vehicle. Warning indicators provide information to the driver of conditions that could potentially cause personal injury or alter vehicle performance.
Reconfigurable Telltale (RTT) Indicators
Reconfigurable Telltale (RTT) indicators illuminate in the message center and replace the typical informational or warning indicator using the same iconic representation. When multiple warnings exist, the Reconfigurable Telltale (RTT) indicators cycle through each display until the condition has been corrected unless the Reconfigurable Telltale (RTT) indicator is in a fixed position.
Network Messaged Inputs
Module messaging has increased over time and is now the standard for sending and receiving information required to operate the IPC. The majority of the inputs required to operate the IPC are received over the HS-CAN.
Hardwired Inputs
The IPC requires hardwired inputs from components that are not hardwired to other modules and, therefore, are not on the HS-CAN but are required for specific IPC functions.
The hardwired inputs are provided by the following components:
- Fuel pump assembly
- Hill descent switch
- Park detect switch
- Traction control disable switch
- Washer fluid level switch

Factory-Transport Mode
During vehicle build, some modules, such as the IPC and the BCM are set in factory mode. While in the factory mode the IPC displays FACTORY MODE CONTACT DEALER in the message center. If the vehicle is set in factory mode, the system does not automatically exit the mode and must be manually set to either the transport or normal operation mode.
When the vehicle build is complete, the vehicle is set to transport mode. While in transport mode, the IPC displays TRANSPORT MODE CONTACT DEALER in the message center. Transport mode is used to reduce the drain on the battery during longer periods where the vehicle is not used. Various systems may be altered or are disabled when in the transport mode. The vehicle automatically reverts to normal operation mode after being driven 80 km (50 mi). Refer to Multifunction Electronic Modules for the Transport Mode Deactivation.
The IPC receives the vehicle mode message from the BCM over the HS-CAN.
Gateway Function
The IPC acts as a gateway module by receiving information through the HS-CAN and converting and transmitting it to the audio and multimedia modules using the I-CAN.
MyKey ®
The MyKey ® feature allows the customer to program a restricted driving mode that is tied to one or more keys known as a MyKey ® key. The following features are provided by the IPC when a MyKey ® key is being used:
- At the beginning of vehicle start up, as part of the welcome strategy, the message center greets the MyKey ® driver with MYKEY ACTIVE DRIVE SAFELY displayed in the message center. If the MyKey ® speed limiter feature is turned on, the message center also displays the MyKey ® administrator selected top speed setting message; SPEED LIMITED TO XX MPH (km/h). The MyKey ® top speed selections are; 105, 110, 120 or 130 km/h (65, 70, 75, or 80 mph) or to the administrator desired setpoint.
- The IPC provides a periodic Belt-Minder ® warning chime until the driver and passenger safety belts are buckled. When the Belt-Minder ® is issued, the ACM is muted and the message center displays BUCKLE UP TO UNMUTE AUDIO.
- If the MyKey ® speed limiter feature is turned on and the vehicle speed approaches the selected top speed (105, 110, 120 or 130 km/h [65, 70, 75, or 80 mph]), the message center displays NEAR VEHICLE TOP SPEED along with a chime.
- If the MyKey ® speed limiter feature is turned on and the vehicle speed reaches the selected top speed (105, 110, 120 or 130 km/h [65, 70, 75, or 80 mph]), the message center displays VEHICLE AT TOP SPEED OF MYKEY SETTING along with a chime.
- If the speed warning is selected at one of the preset values (75, 90, 105 km/h [45, 55, 65 mph]) and the vehicle approaches the preset speed, the message center displays CHECK SPEED DRIVE SAFELY along with a chime.
- At approximately 1/8 tank of remaining fuel, the IPC illuminates the low fuel message center indicator and the message center displays FUEL LEVEL LOW along with a chime.

For information on the MyKey ® features, refer to the Owner's Literature.
Networked Input Messages and Default States
The IPC uses input messages from other modules to control the gauges, informational indicators, and warning indicators over the communication networks. All messaged inputs required by the IPC are received over the HS-CAN. If a required message is missing or invalid for less than 5 seconds, the gauge or indicator that requires the message remains at the last commanded state based upon the last message received. For example, if the stability/traction control status message is missing for less than 5 seconds and the stability/traction control indicator (sliding car icon) was on, the indicator remains on until the next message is received. If the message remains missing or invalid for more than 5 seconds, the IPC sets a U-code DTC and the IPC output becomes a default action for the indicator or gauge. Each indicator or gauge utilizes a different default strategy depending on the nature of the indication. Refer to the diagnostic overview descriptions located before each individual pinpoint test for further description of the default action specific to each indicator or gauge. If the missing messaged input to the IPC returns at any time, the normal function of the gauge or indicator resumes.
It is very important to understand:
- where the input originates.
- all the information necessary for a feature to operate.
- which module(s) receive(s) the input or command message.
- which module controls the output of the feature.
- whether the module that receives the input controls the output of the feature, or whether it outputs a message over the communication network to another module.
Prove-Out
The IPC and other vehicle modules carry out a display prove-out to verify all module controlled warning/indicator lamps and monitored systems are functioning correctly within the IPC. The IPC and other modules, such as the RCM, provide a timed prove-out while other indicators illuminate until engine start up. When the ignition is cycled to on with the engine off, the indicators illuminate to prove-out according to the following table:Prove-Out

Fuel Gauge
The IPC sends a reference voltage to the fuel level sender. As the fuel level changes, a float actuates the variable resistor fuel level sender, raising or lowering the fuel level signal voltage. The IPC monitors the changes in voltage from both senders and commands the fuel gauge with a corresponding movement of the pointer.
The IPC interprets the fuel level input and uses 4 different operating modes to calculate the fuel level:
- Anti-slosh (default mode)
- Key OFF fueling
- Key ON fueling
- Recovery
After a fuel fill up, the time for the fuel gauge to move from empty (E) to full (F) ranges from 2 seconds to 55 minutes depending on which operating mode the fuel gauge is in.
Anti-Slosh Mode
The default fuel gauge mode is called the anti-slosh mode. To prevent fuel gauge changes from fuel slosh (gauge instability due to changes in fuel sensor readings caused by fuel moving around in the tank), the fuel gauge takes approximately 55 minutes to go from empty (E) to full (F).
Key OFF Fueling Mode
The key OFF fueling mode (2 seconds to read empty [E] to full [F]) requires the following conditions be met:
- The ignition must be OFF when refueling the vehicle.
- At least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity must be added to the fuel tank.
- The IPC must receive a valid key ON fuel sensor reading within one second of the ignition being put into RUN. The key ON sample readings are considered valid if the fuel sensor reading is between 10 ohms ± 2 ohms and 180 ohms ± 4 ohms.
If these conditions are not met, the fuel gauge stays in the anti-slosh mode, which results in a slow to read full (F) event.
Key ON Fueling Mode
The key ON fueling mode (approximately 60 seconds to read empty [E] to full [F]) requires the following conditions be met:
- The transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
- The ignition is in RUN.
- At least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity must be added to the fuel tank.
In key ON fueling mode, a 30 second timer activates after the transmission is put into the PARK or NEUTRAL position. When the 30 second time has elapsed and at least 15% of the vehicle's fuel capacity has been added, the fuel gauge response time is 60 seconds to read from empty (E) to full (F). When the transmission is shifted out of PARK or NEUTRAL, the fuel gauge strategy reverts to the anti-slosh mode. The key ON fueling mode prevents slow to read full events from happening if the customer refuels the vehicle with the ignition in RUN.
Recovery Mode
Recovery mode is incorporated into the IPC strategy to recover from a missing fuel level input after a refueling event. Missing fuel level inputs result from intermittent opens in the fuel sensor or its circuits. Recovery mode (empty [E] to full [F] in approximately 20 minutes) is initiated when the following conditions are met:
- The IPC is in the anti-slosh (default) mode.
- The actual fuel level in the tank is greater than what is being displayed by the fuel gauge.
Odometer
The IPC receives the odometer count message from the PCM. The IPC monitors the odometer count input from the PCM and commands the odometer with a digital display in the message center.
Speedometer
The PCM calculates the vehicle speed from the wheel count message received from the ABS module and from the tire size and axle ratio configuration in the PCM VID block. The PCM provides the IPC with a vehicle speed message to command the speedometer pointer.
The IPC provides a tolerance which allows the gauge to display between 3% lower and 7% higher than the actual vehicle speed. This means that with an actual vehicle speed of 96.6 km/h (60 mph), the speedometer may indicate between 93.7 km/h (58.2 mph) and 103.3 km/h (64.2 mph), which is normal.
Tachometer
The base, mid-level and optional IPC tachometers appear differently but function the same. The base and mid-level IPC uses an analog gauge. The optional IPC uses a virtual gauge (video image) that provides a 6, 000 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) bar graph or a simulated 7, 000 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) gauge display depending on the selected display mode.
The PCM uses the CKP sensor to measure the engine Revolutions Per Minute (RPM). The IPC receives the engine speed message from the PCM.
Temperature Gauge
The temperature gauge is an analog gauge in the base and mid-level IPC. The temperature gauge is a virtual gauge (video image) on the high-level IPC and is located in the LH LCD display area.
The PCM uses the CHT sensor to measure the engine temperature. The IPC receives the engine coolant temperature message from the PCM.
Indicators
4WD (4X4 L, 4X4 H And 4X4 A) Indicators
The IPC receives the 4WD status from the TCCM. If the vehicle is shifted into 4X4 auto, low or high, the TCCM sends the IPC the 4x4 auto, 4x4 high or 4x4 low message to illuminate the applicable indicator.
ABS /Brake/Stability-Traction Control System Indication
The brake and stability-traction control system indication is controlled by the ABS module, parking brake and brake fluid level switches though the BCM. The ABS module can request the IPC illuminate multiple indicators for various fault conditions. The following table provides a summary of the basic fault conditions and the indicators that are illuminated for each condition.

ABS Warning Indicator
The IPC receives the ABS warning indicator request from the ABS module to control the ABS warning indicator. If a fault condition exists in the ABS, the ABS module sends the IPC the ABS warning indicator request to either flash or illuminate the ABS warning indicator.
Airbag Warning Indicator
The IPC receives the restraints indicator request from the RCM. If a SRS concern is detected, the RCM sets a DTC and sends the restraints indicator request to the IPC to illuminate the airbag warning indicator.
Brake Warning Indicator
The IPC uses 3 basic messaged inputs to control the brake warning indicator. The first two inputs are for the parking brake position switch and the brake fluid level switch, which are sent from the BCM. The third is the brake warning indicator request sent from the ABS module.
The parking brake position switch is hardwired to the BCM through a single signal circuit while using a separate ground to control the input. The BCM provides a reference voltage to the parking brake position switch. When the parking brake is applied, the parking brake position switch closes to ground, pulling the reference voltage low.
The brake fluid level switch is hardwired to the BCM through separate signal and return circuits to control the input. The BCM provides a reference voltage to the brake fluid level switch. When a low brake fluid level condition exists, the brake fluid level switch closes to ground, pulling the signal and return circuits low. If the brake fluid level switch is disconnected, the BCM reference voltage provided to the brake fluid level switch is sent high.
When the BCM detects either the brake fluid level signal or the parking brake signal circuits low, or the brake fluid level signal and return circuit high, the BCM sends the IPC a brake warning indicator request.
When the ABS module detects a base brake system concern or other ABS related concerns that affect the EBD function, the ABS module sends a brake lamp request to the IPC to illuminate the brake warning indicator and the ABS warning indicator.
Charging System Warning Indicator
The charging system warning indicator is controlled by the IPC based upon the battery charge low message received from the BCM. When a fault is detected in the charging system, the BCM sends the IPC the battery charge low message to illuminate the charging system warning indicator.
Door And Liftgate Ajar
The IPC provides a door ajar warning indicator along with message displays to indicate the status of the doors or liftgate. The BCM monitors each of the ajar inputs and sends the specific door ajar status message to the IPC to display the ajar warning indicator and corresponding warning message.
Engine Over-Temperature Warning Indicator
The IPC provides the temperature warning indicator to alert the driver the engine is over temperature. The IPC uses 2 inputs to control the engine over-temperature warning indicator. When the engine temperature is high, the PCM sends the IPC the engine coolant temperature message to illuminate the engine over-temperature warning indicator. If the PCM determines the engine temperature is high enough to intervene, the PCM enters into a mitigation strategy to attempt to reduce the engine temperature and sends the IPC the engine overheat mitigation active message to illuminate the engine over-temperature warning indicator.
Front Fog Lamp Indicator
When the front fog lamps are turned on, the BCM sends the fog lamp status message to the IPC to illuminate the front fog lamp indicator.
High Beam Indicator
When the high beams are turned on, the BCM sends a headlamp high beam indicator request to the IPC to illuminate the high beam indicator.
Hill Descent Indicator
The IPC uses the hill descent indicator to inform the driver the hill descent function is active. When the hill descent system has been switched on by the driver, the ABS module sends the IPC the hill descent indication message to illuminate the hill descent indicator. The hill descent indicator illuminates whenever the switch has been engaged regardless of what mode the hill descent system is in (ready, active control or overheat).
Lights On Indicator
When the parking lamps are turned on, the BCM sends the parklamp status message to the IPC to illuminate the lights on indicator.
Low Fuel Indicator
To supplement the fuel gauge indication, the IPC provides the low fuel indicator. When the fuel level reaches 1/16 of a tank or 1/8 of a tank for MyKey ® users, the IPC illuminates the low fuel indicator.
Low Oil Pressure Warning Indicator
The engine oil pressure switch is hardwired to the PCM. When the engine oil pressure is low, the PCM provides the oil pressure warning indicator request to the IPC.
Low Washer Fluid Indicator
The IPC controls the low washer fluid based on the hardwired low washer fluid switch status. When the washer fluid is low, the low washer fluid switch closes to ground and the IPC illuminates the low washer fluid indicator.
Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Indicator
The IPC provides a powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator to indicate transmission, ETC and 4WD concerns. The IPC receives the transmission service required and engine service required messages from the PCM. The IPC receives the 4x4 range fault message from the TCCM. When a concern exists in any of the 3 powertrain systems, the PCM or TCCM sends a message to the IPC to illuminate the powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator.
Rear Fog Lamp Indicator (If Equipped)
When the rear fog lamps are turned on, the BCM sends the rear fog lamp indicator request to the IPC to illuminate the rear fog lamp indicator.
Safety Belt Warning Indicator
The RCM monitors the safety belt position through the safety belt buckle switch. When the safety belt is unbuckled, the RCM sends a safety belt indicator request to the IPC to illuminate the safety belt warning indicator.
Stability-Traction Control Indicator (Sliding Car Icon)
The IPC uses the stability-traction control indicator request message from the ABS module to control the stability-traction control indicator (sliding car icon). The stability-traction control indicator (sliding car icon) flashes when the vehicle stability-traction control is in active mode or is being controlled by the ABS module. The stability-traction control indicator (sliding car icon) illuminates continuously if a fault condition exists in the stability-traction control system. The IPC monitors the stability-traction control indicator request message from the ABS module and either flashes the stability-traction control indicator (sliding car icon) or illuminates it steady depending on the condition.
Stability-Traction Control Disabled Indicator (Sliding Car OFF Icon)
The stability-traction control is turned on/off through the traction control disable switch hardwired to the IPC. When the stability-traction control is switched on or off, the IPC sends the stability-traction control mode request to the ABS module. The ABS either enables or disables the stability-traction control system and sends the stability-traction control indicator request message to the IPC to illuminate or turn off the stability-traction control disabled indicator (sliding car OFF icon) based upon the system state. The stability-traction control system defaults back on or enabled once the ignition is cycled off then back on again.
When a MyKey ® programmed key is in use and the AdvanceTrac ® feature is configured always on, the traction control system cannot be disabled and the stability-traction control disabled indicator (sliding car OFF icon) does not illuminate when the traction control disable button is pressed. The stability-traction control indicator still functions normally to indicate a stability-traction control system fault and a stability-traction control active event.
TPMS Indicator
The BCM receives the tire pressure data from the TPM and continuously monitors the tire pressure data. The IPC receives the TPMS indicator message from the BCM.
If the BCM determines the tire pressure has exceeded the low tire pressure limits, the tire pressure indicator message is sent to the IPC to illuminate the TPMS warning indicator. If a TPMS fault condition exists, the BCM sends the tire pressure indicator message to the IPC to flash the TPMS warning indicator.
Turn Signal-Hazard Indicator
When the multifunction switch is in the LH or RH turn position or if the hazard switch is on, the BCM sends the turn signal command message to the IPC. Upon receipt of the applicable turn signal on/off command, the IPC flashes the turn signal indicator on and off.
MIL
The MIL is controlled by the IPC using the MIL request from the PCM.
Tow Haul Indicator
The tow haul indicator illuminates when the tow haul system has been engaged and is actively providing tow haul control for the vehicle. When the vehicle is actively providing tow haul control, the PCM sends the transmission tow haul mode message to the IPC to illuminate the tow haul indicator.
Component Description
Brake Fluid Level Switch
The brake fluid level switch is mounted in the master cylinder reservoir and is hardwired to the BCM through separate signal and return circuits. The brake fluid level switch is grounded to a body ground through a separate circuit. The BCM provides a battery reference voltage to the brake fluid level switch. When the brake fluid level is low, the float drops closing the switch, pulling the reference voltage low. When the brake fluid level is high, the float lifts, releasing the switch contacts and removing the ground to the BCM.
Fuel Level Sender
The fuel level sender is mounted to the fuel pump assembly. The fuel level sender is a dual sweep potentiometer style resistor connected to a float mechanism. The dual sweep design provides a second resistance measurement that reduces the intermittent loss of data due to corrosion between the resistor wires and the sweep arm. As the fuel level changes, the float rises or falls with the fuel level moving the sweep arm across the resistor wires. This movement either increases or decreases the resistance through the unit. The fuel level sender resistance ranges from 180 ohms ± 4 ohms at empty (E) to 10 ohms ± 2 ohms at full (F). When the fuel level is low, the fuel level sender resistance is high. When the fuel level is high, the fuel level sender resistance is low.
The fuel pump assembly is hardwired to the IPC through separate signal and return circuits. The fuel level return circuit is grounded internally in the IPC. The IPC provides a battery reference voltage on the fuel level signal circuit. As the fuel level changes, the change in resistance raises or lowers the fuel level signal voltage depending on the resistance of the fuel level sender.
IPC
The IPC provides the driver with a system status and alerts the driver when certain conditions exist in the vehicle. The IPC requires PMI when the IPC is replaced.
Park Position Detect Switch
The park position detect switch is hardwired to the IPC through a single signal circuit. The park position detect switch is hardwired to a separate ground circuit. The IPC provides a battery reference voltage to the park position detect switch. When the selector lever is in PARK (P), the park position detect switch routes the reference voltage to ground, pulling the circuit low to the IPC. When the selector lever is moved out of PARK (P), the park position detect switch opens to ground sending the reference voltage high.
Parking Brake Position Switch
The parking brake position switch is hardwired to the BCM through a single signal circuit and grounded to the body through a separate ground circuit. The BCM provides a battery reference voltage on the signal circuit. When the parking brake is not applied, the parking brake position switch is open. When the parking brake is applied, the parking brake position switch closes, pulling the reference voltage low.
