Vehicles With Auto Start/Stop Function

On vehicles with auto start/stop function, information is required about whether a gear is engaged or the transmission is in neutral. The neutral position sensor is located on the transmission housing for this purpose. This is connected to the shift linkage by an additional linkage on the transmission.

The neutral position sensor is a Hall sensor and is supplied with 5 Volt by the PCM. The signal voltage varies between 0.5 and 5 Volt when operating the linkage and is monitored by the PCM.

A fixed voltage value is stored in the PCM for each gear. All values lying between those for the individual gears are stored as values for the neutral position. The PCM therefore always detects whether or not a gear is engaged.

After replacing the sensor, the value from the old sensor is reset in the PCM using IDS. The vehicle must then be driven a certain distance so that the PCM can learn the new values for the relevant gears and neutral positions.

To do this, the vehicle must be driven a total of 5 times for 10 seconds each, alternately in 3rd and 4th gear with low acceleration.

NOTE: If a fault occurs on the neutral position sensor when the engine is stationary, the vehicle can still be started with the ignition key. In this case, a corresponding DTC is set in the PCM.
