Pinpoint Test A: The Parking Aid Is Inoperative
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 131, Parking Aid for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.
Normal Operation - Rear Parking Aid System
The rear parking aid system is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the reverse gear is selected. The PAM (Parking Aid Module) receives reverse gear input from the IC (Instrument Cluster) through the MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network). Voltage is supplied to the rear parking aid sensors from the PAM (Parking Aid Module). The PAM (Parking Aid Module) supplies ground to the parking aid sensors and receives a signal from the parking aid sensors. The system can be disabled through the message center which is integral to the IC (Instrument Cluster).
Normal Operation - Front Parking Aid System
The front parking aid system is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the drive gear is selected. The Parking Aid Module (PAM) receives drive gear input from the Instrument Cluster (IC) through the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). Voltage is supplied to the front parking aid sensors from the PAM (Parking Aid Module). The PAM (Parking Aid Module) supplies ground to the parking aid sensors and receives a signal from the parking aid sensors. The system can be disabled through the message center which is integral to the IC (Instrument Cluster).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Parking aid sensor alignment
- Parking aid sensor isolator deformed
- Bumper
- PAM (Parking Aid Module)
PINPOINT TEST A : THE PARKING AID IS INOPERATIVE
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
A1 CHECK FOR RECORDED PAM (Parking Aid Module) DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST
- Check the PAM (Parking Aid Module) DTCs from the self-test.
Are any PAM DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to DTC Charts. Parking Aid
No
GO to A2.
A2 CHECK THE PARKING AID SENSOR ISOLATOR RINGS
- Inspect the parking aid sensor isolator rings for deformation or damage.
Are the parking aid sensor isolator rings OK?
Yes
GO to A3.
No
INSTALL a new front or rear parking aid sensor or isolator ring as necessary.
A3 CHECK THE PARKING AID SENSORS FOR CORRECT ALIGNMENT
NOTE: If the vehicle was in a collision, the parking aid sensors may not be aligned correctly.
NOTE: The bumper must be clean and free of ice to operate correctly.
- Check the front and rear bumper and parking aid sensors for correct alignment and signs of collision damage.
Are the bumpers alignment and parking aid sensor alignment correct?
Yes
If the parking aid is inoperative only with the drive gear selected, GO to A4.
If the parking aid is inoperative only with the reverse gear selected, GO to A5.
No
REALIGN or INSTALL a new front or rear bumper or ALIGN the sensors. If the vehicle was in a collision, further body work may be required to bring the parking aid sensors into correct alignment.
A4 CHECK FOR CORRECT DRIVE GEAR INPUT
- Apply the parking brake.
- Ignition ON.
- Select DRIVE.
- Check the IC (Instrument Cluster) message center PRNDL indicator.
Does DRIVE (D) appear in the message center?
Yes
GO to A7.
No
GO to A6.
A5 CHECK FOR CORRECT REVERSE GEAR INPUT
- Apply the parking brake.
- Ignition ON.
- Select REVERSE.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PAM (Parking Aid Module) DataLogger.
- Monitor the PAM (Parking Aid Module) PID TRANSGR.
Does the PID indicate the transmission is in reverse?
Yes
GO to A7.
No
GO to A6.
A6 CHECK THE PCM FOR DIGITAL TR (Transmission Range) SENSOR DTCs
- Check the PCM for DTC P0705, P0706, P0708 or P0709.
Are any of these DTCs present?
Yes
REFER to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle &/or Transmission Control Systems to continue diagnosis of the digital TR (Transmission Range) sensor.
No
GO to A9.
A7 VERIFY THE PAM (Parking Aid Module) OPERATION
- Test the parking aid system operation.
- Carry out the azimuth system check. Refer to Azimuth System Check .
- Carry out the elevation system check. Refer to Elevation System Check .
Does the parking aid system pass at least one of the above system checks?
Yes
GO to A8.
No
GO to A9
A8 MONITOR THE PAM (Parking Aid Module) DISTANCE PIDs
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Parking Aid PID.
- Monitor the PAM (Parking Aid Module) distance PIDs while moving a test object into and out of the azimuth field directly behind each of the rear sensors.
PID Description Rear Parking Aid Sensors LRI_DIST Left rear inner parking aid sensor distance LRO_DIST Left rear outer parking aid sensor distance RRI_DIST Right rear inner parking aid sensor distance RRO_DIST Right rear outer parking aid sensor distance Front Parking Aid Sensors LFI_DIST Left front inner parking aid sensor distance LFO_DIST Left front outer parking aid sensor distance RFI_DIST Right front inner parking aid sensor distance RFO_DIST Right front outer parking aid sensor distance
Do the PID readings correspond to the approximate distance between the sensor and the test object?
Yes
GO to A9.
No
INSTALL a new sensor(s) for the one in question. REFER to Parking Aid Sensor - Front or Parking Aid Sensor - Rear . CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
A9 CHECK FOR CORRECT PAM (Parking Aid Module) OPERATION
- Disconnect the PAM (Parking Aid Module) connector.
- Check for:
- correct connector seating and latching
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the PAM (Parking Aid Module) connector and make sure it seats and latches correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new PAM (Parking Aid Module). REFER to Parking Aid Module (PAM) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
