Power Transfer Unit (PTU)

NOTE:
3.5L with Aisin AW21 transaxle shown in illustration, 3.0L with 6F35 transaxle similar.

All vehicles
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
- Remove and discard the 4 front driveshaft-to-Power Transfer Unit (PTU) flange bolts.
- Using a suitable pry bar as shown in illustration, separate the driveshaft flange from the PTU flange.
- Remove the RH catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to

3.0L vehicles
- Remove the intermediate shaft. For additional information, refer to
FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS
.
All vehicles
- Remove the 2 PTU-to-support bracket bolts, then remove the 3 PTU support bracket bolts and the PTU support bracket.
- Remove the 5 PTU-to-transaxle bolts.
- Separate the PTU from the transaxle. Remove the PTU from the vehicle.
Vehicles equipped with Aisin AW21 transaxle
- Using a suitable tool, remove the compression seal and discard.
NOTE:
A new compression seal must be installed whenever the PTU is removed from the vehicle. Failure to replace the compression seal may allow debris to enter the area around the transaxle seal and cause the transaxle seal to fail.
