All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  4. Recover the A/C system. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS .
  5. Place the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position and the ignition key in the OFF position.
  6. NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter® 28-75-1 or equivalent).

  7. Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
  8. Remove the 2 nuts and the steering joint cover.

  9. NOTE: Do not allow the intermediate shaft to rotate while it is disconnected from the gear or damage to the clockspring can occur. If there is evidence that the intermediate shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .

  10. Remove the bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear.
  11. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  12. Remove the 4 screws and position the RH fender splash shield aside.

  13. Remove the 6 pin-type retainers (4 shown in illustration) and the RH splash shield.

  14. Remove the bolt and the Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS) wiring ground wire from in the RH front wheel well.

  15. Remove the 4 screws and position the LH fender splash shield aside.

  16. Remove the 6 pin-type retainers (4 shown in illustration) and the LH splash shield.

  17. Remove the exhaust flexible pipe. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .

    All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles 

  18. NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft for installation.

  19. Remove the 4 bolts (3 shown in illustration) and support the driveshaft with a length of mechanic's wire.

    All vehicles 

  20. NOTE: The steering gear-to-dash seal must be removed or it will be damaged when lowering the subframe.

  21. Release the 4 clips (2 shown in illustration) and slide the steering gear-to-dash seal off of the steering gear and into the passenger compartment.
  22. If equipped, remove the 2 bolts and the heat shield.

  23. Remove the 2 bolts and the engine roll restrictor.

  25. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from the tie-rod ends.

  27. Using the Tie-Rod End Remover, separate the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles.

  29. Remove the nuts and separate the stabilizer bar links from the struts.
  30. Remove the LH halfshaft and the intermediate shaft. For additional information, refer to FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS .
  31. Disconnect the 2 EPAS electrical connectors near the front of the subframe.

  32. Detach the 3 wiring harness retainers from the LH front of the subframe.

  33. Position the Powertrain Lift under the subframe assembly.

  37. Remove the subframe nuts and the subframe brackets.

  39. Remove the front subframe nuts.
  40. Lower the subframe assembly from the vehicle.
  41. Remove the 2 transaxle fluid cooler tube secondary latches.

  42. Using the Transmission Cooler Line Disconnect Tool, disconnect the 2 transaxle fluid cooler tubes.

  43. Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil.
    • Install the drain plug and tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).

  44. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

  45. Remove the engine Air Cleaner (ACL) and ACL outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING - 3.0L (4V) .
  46. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  47. Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the power feed wires from the battery terminal.

  48. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector.

  49. Disconnect the 2 engine wiring harness electrical connectors.

  50. Remove the bolt and position aside the ground wire.

  51. Detach the 2 wiring harness retainers from the battery tray bracket and transaxle mount.

  52. Remove the PCM ground bolt and position aside the ground wire.

  53. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.

  54. Disconnect the fuel supply tube from the fuel rail. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
  55. Disconnect the EVAP tube-to-EVAP canister purge valve quick connect coupling and the brake booster vacuum tube from the upper intake manifold.
    • Detach the fuel tube and EVAP tube-to-EVAP canister purge valve tube retainer from the upper intake manifold.

  56. Disconnect the LH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.

  57. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses.

  58. Disconnect the 2 heater hoses.

  59. Disconnect the gearshift cable from the transaxle.

  60. Remove the 2 shift cable bracket bolts, and position the cable and bracket aside.

  61. Remove the A/C tube/windshield washer bottle bracket bolt.

  62. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C tube.
    • Discard the gasket.

  63. Disconnect the LH Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) electrical connector.

  64. Remove the 4 bolts (3 shown in illustration) and the LH catalytic converter heat shield.

  65. Remove the 6 nuts and the LH catalytic converter manifold.
    • Discard the 6 LH catalytic converter manifold nuts and gasket.

  66. Clean and inspect the LH catalytic converter manifold. For additional information, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
  67. Remove and discard the 6 LH catalytic converter manifold studs.

  68. Remove the bolt and separate the A/C manifold from the A/C compressor.
    • Discard the gasket.

    AWD vehicles 

  69. Disconnect the RH CMS electrical connector.

  70. Disconnect the RH Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.

  71. Using the Exhaust Gas Oxygen Sensor Socket, remove the RH HO2S.

  78. Remove the torque converter nut access plug.

  82. NOTE: Position a suitable block of wood under the transaxle.
  83. Install the Powertrain Lift and the Adjustable Grip Arm onto the engine.
    • Raise the engine and transaxle 25.4 mm (1 in) to neutralize the engine and transaxle mounts.

  84. Remove the rear transaxle support through bolt.

  85. Remove the bolt and ground strap from the engine mount bracket.

  95. Using the Spreader Bar, Engine Lifting Brackets, Engine Lifting Bracket Set and a suitable engine crane, remove the engine and transaxle from the lift table.

  96. Remove the nut and the starter wiring ground.

  100. Disconnect the 2 transmission electrical connectors and detach the wiring retainer from the stud bolt.

  101. Remove the 4 remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts.

  102. Using the Spreader Bar, Engine Lifting Brackets, Engine Lifting Bracket Set and the Heavy Duty Floor Crane, separate the engine and transaxle.
