Pinpoint Test C: The Power Seat Moves But Is Noisy

  1. C1 CHECK THE TRACK ALIGNMENT 
    WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from the vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in personal injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    NOTE: If a seat equipped with a supplemental restraint system (SRS) component is being serviced, the SRS must be depowered. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    NOTE: The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the restraint control module (RCM) fuse is removed and the key is in the ON position. This is normal operation and does not indicate an SRS fault.
    NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
    • Depower the SRS. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering in the General Procedures portion of SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    • For vehicles equipped with seat side air bags, carry out the following:
      • Disconnect driver seat side air bag C367. Connect restraint system diagnostic tool 418-133.
    • Disconnect the driver safety belt pretensioner electrical connector at the pretensioner.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • WARNING: Make certain no one is in the vehicle and there is nothing blocking or placed in front of any air bag module when the battery is connected. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    • Connect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
    • Check the alignment of the track to the floor and the track to the seat.
    • Is the track out of alignment? 
    1. YES  : ALIGN the track to the seat and to the floor. DISCONNECT the battery. If equipped, REMOVE the restraint system diagnostic tool and CONNECT the driver seat side air bag connector. CONNECT the driver safety belt pretensioner electrical connector. REPOWER the supplemental restraint system (SRS). REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  C2.
  2. C2 CHECK THE SEAT TRACK INTEGRITY 
    • While operating the seat, inspect the seat track for binding and/or damage.
    • Does the seat track appear to be free from damage/binding? 
    1. YES  : Go to  C3.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new front seat track. REFER to Seat Track . DISCONNECT the battery. If equipped, REMOVE the restraint system diagnostic tool and CONNECT the driver seat side air bag connector. CONNECT the driver safety belt pretensioner electrical connector. REPOWER the supplemental restraint system (SRS). REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. C3 CHECK THE SEAT MOTOR INTEGRITY 
    • While operating the seat, listen for excessive seat motor noise. Compare the noise to a similar vehicle for reference.
    • Is the seat motor noise excessive? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new front seat track. REFER to Seat Track . DISCONNECT the battery. If equipped, REMOVE the restraint system diagnostic tool and CONNECT the driver seat side air bag connector. CONNECT the driver safety belt pretensioner electrical connector. REPOWER the supplemental restraint system (SRS). REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Allow the customer to compare to a similar vehicle to determine the amount of motor noise is product characteristic. DISCONNECT the battery. If equipped, REMOVE the restraint system diagnostic tool and CONNECT the driver seat side air bag connector. CONNECT the driver safety belt pretensioner electrical connector. REPOWER the supplemental restraint system (SRS). REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. TEST the system for normal operation.
