Pinpoint Test G: The Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Control Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Ford Pickup, 2007 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2007 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2007 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
- G1 CHECK CIRCUITS 640 (RD/YE), 1002 (BK/PK) AND 1306 (PK/WH) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: 4WD Control Module C281a
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between the 4WD control module, harness side and ground as follows:
Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
Connector-Pin Circuit C281a-1 1306 (PK/WH) C281a-2 1306 (PK/WH) C281a-5 640 (RD/YE) C281a-6 1002 (BK/PK) - Are the voltages at each pin greater than 9 volts?
- YES : Go to G2.
- NO : VERIFY the central junction box (CJB) fuses 19 (10A), 33 (15A) and 45 (10A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
- G2 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Measure the resistance between C281a-3, circuit 57 (BK) and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to G3.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
- G3 CHECK CIRCUIT 70 (LB/WH) FOR AN OPEN BETWEEN THE DLC AND THE 4WD CONTROL MODULE
- Disconnect: 4WD Control Module C281b
- Measure the resistance between the 4WD control module C281b -10, circuit 70 (LB/WH), harness side and the DLC C251-7, circuit 70 (LB/WH), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to G4.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. CARRY OUT the data link diagnostics test.
- G4 CHECK FOR CORRECT 4WD CONTROL MODULE OPERATION
- Disconnect all the 4WD control module connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the 4WD control module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new 4WD control module. REFER to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) SYSTEMS article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.
