Pinpoint Test K: The Fire Suppression System Indicator Is Never On (Police Vehicles Only)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
  1. K1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND FSM SELF-TESTS
    • Check for recorded FSM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
    • Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes  : If DTC B1921 is recorded, GO to  K5.

If DTC B29B3 is recorded, GO to  K3.

If DTC B29B4 is recorded, GO to  K4.

For all other DTCs, REFER to the FIRE SUPPRESSION MODULE (FSM) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX .

    No  : GO to K2.

  2. K2 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
    • Select the instrument cluster indicator lamp control active command. Trigger the fire suppression system indicator active command on and off. Observe the fire suppression system indicator.
    • Does the fire suppression system indicator illuminate when triggered on, and turn off when triggered off?

    Yes  : GO to K3.

    No  : GO to  K8.

  3. K3 CHECK THE FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM INDICATOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect the battery. Refer to CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
    • Wait approximately 60 seconds to allow the FSM back-up power to discharge.
    • Disconnect: FSM C3281a.
    • Connect the battery.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Does the fire suppression system indicator illuminate?

    Yes  : GO to  K7.

    No  : GO to K4.

  4. K4 CHECK CIRCUIT 2318 (LG/RD) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C2220.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C2220-10, circuit 2318 (LG/RD), harness side and the FSM C3281a-6, circuit 2318 (LG/RD), harness side.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

    Yes  : GO to K5.

No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  5. K5 CHECK CIRCUIT 2318 (LG/RD) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    • Connect: FSM C3281a.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C2220-10, circuit 2318 (LG/RD), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present?

Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

    No  : GO to K6.

  6. K6 CHECK CIRCUIT 1203 (BK/LB) FOR AN OPEN
    • Measure the resistance between the FSM C3281a-7, circuit 1203 (BK/LB), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

    Yes  : GO to K7.

No  : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  7. K7 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?

Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.

No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  8. K8 CHECK FOR CORRECT FSM OPERATION
    • Disconnect the battery. Refer to CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION .
    • Wait approximately 60 seconds to allow the FSM back-up power to discharge.
    • Disconnect the FSM connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the FSM connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Connect the battery.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?

Yes  : INSTALL a new FSM. REFER to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM . TEST the system for normal operation.

No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
