Pinpoint Test E: The Headlamps Are On Continuously

- E1 VERIFY THE HEADLAMP OPERATION
- Key in OFF position.
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Are the low beam headlamps illuminated?
NOTE: Make sure the multifunction switch is in the LOW BEAM position. - E2 CHECK THE AUTOLAMP SYSTEM
- Disconnect: VSM C3008a
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
- E3 CHECK THE VEHICLE CONTENT
- Check the vehicle content for DRL.
- Is the vehicle equipped with DRL?
- E4 CHECK THE DRL SYSTEM
- Disconnect: DRL Resistor C196
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
- YES : Go to E5.
- NO : REFER to Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) in this article.
- E5 CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH
- Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C2150a
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
- YES : Go to E6.
- NO : INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to Headlamp Switch in this article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E6 CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT TO THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
- Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202b
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
- E7 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
- Carry out the multifunction switch component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING.
- Is the multifunction switch OK?
- YES : REPAIR circuit 15 (RD/YE). TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E8 CHECK CIRCUITS 160 (DB/WH) (LH HEADLAMP) AND 161 (DG/OG) (RH HEADLAMP) FOR A SHORT TO POWER
- Disconnect: CJB C270b
- Do either of the headlamps continue to illuminate?
- YES : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : Go to E9.
- E9 CHECK CIRCUIT 13 (RD/BK) FOR A SHORT TO POWER
- Connect: CJB C270b
- Disconnect: CJB C270h
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
- YES : REPAIR or INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E10 CHECK THE FOG LAMP RELAY
- Disconnect: Fog Lamp Relay C1007
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
- YES : Go to E11.
- NO : INSTALL a new fog lamp relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E11 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH (HIGH BEAM)
- Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202b
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
- YES : Go to E12.
- NO : INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E12 CHECK CIRCUIT 275 (YE) FOR A SHORT TO POWER
- Disconnect: CJB C270h
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
- YES : Go to E13.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E13 CHECK CIRCUIT 12 (LG/BK) FOR A SHORT TO POWER
- Disconnect: CJB C270a
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
- YES : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : Go to E14.
- E14 CHECK THE HIGH BEAM RELAY
- Disconnect: High Beam Relay C1050
- Carry out the high beam relay component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING.
- Is the high beam relay OK?
- YES : REPAIR or INSTALL a new CJB. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : INSTALL a new high beam relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E15 CHECK FOR CORRECT VSM OPERATION
- Disconnect all the VSM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the VSM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new VSM. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
