Pinpoint Test E: One Or More Illumination Source(S) Is Inoperative

CAUTION:
Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
- E1 CHECK THE INOPERATIVE ILLUMINATION SOURCE
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
- Observe the illumination.
- Are all of the illumination sources inoperative?
- YES : Go to Pinpoint Test A .
- NO
: If the headlamp switch illumination is inoperative, go to E2 .
If the 4WD mode switch illumination is inoperative, go to E4 .
If the speed control switch(es) illumination is inoperative, go to E6 .
- E2 CHECK CIRCUIT VLN18 (BU/WH) FOR AN OPEN AT THE HEADLAMP SWITCH
- Disconnect: Headlamp Switch C205
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
- Measure the voltage between the headlamp switch C205-8, circuit VLN18 (BU/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

- YES : Go to E3.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E3 CHECK CIRCUIT GD161 (BK/YE) FOR AN OPEN AT THE HEADLAMP SWITCH
- Measure the resistance between the headlamp switch C205-3, circuit GD161 (BK/YE), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

- YES : INSTALL a new headlamp switch. REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING . TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E4 CHECK CIRCUIT VLN18 (BU/WH) FOR AN OPEN AT THE 4WD MODE SWITCH
- Disconnect: 4WD Mode Switch C284
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
- Measure the voltage between the 4WD mode switch C284-1, circuit VLN18 (BU/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

- YES : Go to E5.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E5 CHECK CIRCUIT GD161 (BK/YE) FOR AN OPEN AT THE 4WD MODE SWITCH
- Measure the resistance between the 4WD mode switch C284-4, circuit GD161 (BK/YE), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

- YES : INSTALL a new 4WD mode switch. REFER to FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) SYSTEMS . TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- E6 CHECK THE SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR SWITCH ILLUMINATION
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
- Observe both speed control actuator switches.
- Are both speed control actuator switches illumination inoperative?
- YES : Go to E7.
- NO : INSTALL a new speed control actuator switch. REFER to SPEED CONTROL . TEST the system for normal operation.
- E7 CHECK FOR POWER TO THE SPEED CONTROL SWITCHES
- Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
- Disconnect: Upper Clockspring Connector
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Measure the voltage between the upper clockspring connector, pin 2, component side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

- E8 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING GROUND CIRCUIT
- Measure the resistance between the upper clockspring connector, pin 1, and the steering column ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms ?

- YES : INSTALL a new steering wheel control switch(es). REFER to SPEED CONTROL . TEST the system for normal operation. REACTIVATE the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
- NO : Go to E9.
- E9 CHECK CIRCUIT GD174 (BK/WH) FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect: Clockspring C218a
- Measure the resistance between the clockspring C218a-5, circuit GD174 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

- YES : Go to E11.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. REACTIVATE the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
- E10 CHECK CIRCUIT VLN18 (BU/WH) FOR AN OPEN AT THE CLOCKSPRING
- Disconnect: Clockspring C218a
- Measure the voltage between the clockspring C218a-4, circuit VLN18 (BU/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

- YES : INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM . TEST the system for normal operation. REACTIVATE the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
- NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. REACTIVATE the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
- E11 CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROL SWITCH HARNESS
- Inspect the steering wheel control switch harness for shorts, opens or damage.
- Is the steering wheel control switch harness OK?
- YES : INSTALL a new steering wheel control switch(es). TEST the system for normal operation. REACTIVATE the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
- NO : INSTALL a new steering wheel control switch harness. TEST the system for normal operation. REACTIVATE the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .
