Pinpoint Test X: The Fail-Safe Cooling Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

- X1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PCM SELF-TESTS
- Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the PCM continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Are any DTCs retrieved?
- YES : REFER to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES to continue diagnosis of the DTCs.
- NO : Go to X2.
- X2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS
- Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the instrument cluster continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Is DTC U0294 retrieved?
- YES
: CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. If DTC U0294 is retrieved again, go to X4 .
For all other instrument cluster DTCs, REFER to the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX .
- NO : Go to X3.
- X3 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
- Key in ON position.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command
- Select the indicator lamp active command. Select the fail-safe warning indicator active command on then off. Observe the check fuel cap indicator.
- Does the fail-safe warning indicator turn on when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
- X4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
- Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS . TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
- X5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
- Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- YES : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
