Pinpoint Test O: The RH Turn Indicator Is Never/Always On

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Mariner and 2006 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
  1. O1 VERIFY THE TURN SIGNAL OPERATION
    • Verify the exterior turn signal operation.
    • Do the exterior turn signals operate correctly?

    Yes  : GO to O2.

No  : REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING to continue diagnosis of the turn signals.

  2. O2 DETERMINE THE CONDITION
    • Observe the RH turn signal indicator.
    • Is the RH turn signal indicator inoperative?

    Yes  : GO to O3.

    No  : GO to  O5.

  3. O3 CHECK CIRCUIT 2 (WH/LB) FOR VOLTAGE
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Place the multifunction switch in the RH turn signal position. Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220-18, circuit 2 (WH/LB), harness side and ground.

    • Does the voltage fluctuate between 0 and greater than 10 volts?

    Yes  : GO to  O7.

    No  : GO to O4.

  4. O4 CHECK CIRCUIT 2 (WH/LB) FOR AN OPEN OR A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280e.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220-18, circuit 2 (WH/LB), harness side and the C2280e-26, circuit 2 (WH/LB), harness side; and between the instrument cluster C220-18, circuit 2 (WH/LB), harness side and ground.

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster and the SJB, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster and ground?

    Yes  : GO to  O9.

No  : REPAIR the circuit in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

  5. O5 CHECK CIRCUIT 2 (WH/LB) FOR VOLTAGE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220-18, circuit 2 (WH/LB), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present?

    Yes  : GO to O6.

    No  : GO to  O8.

  6. O6 CHECK CIRCUIT 2 (WH/LB) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280e.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220-18, circuit 2 (WH/LB), harness side and ground.

    • Is any voltage present?

Yes  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : GO to  O9.

  7. O7 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220-25, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
Fig 5: Checking Circuit 57 (BK) For Open

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

    Yes  : GO to O8.

No  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

  8. O8 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
    • Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?

Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  in this article. TEST the system for normal operation.

No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

  9. O9 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
    • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?

Yes  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-tests.

No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
