Pinpoint Test A: The Parking Brake Will Not Release

  1. A1 CHECK FOR VACUUM 
    NOTE: When checking for vacuum leaks, look for cracks or holes in the hoses and connections.
    • Block the wheels.
    • Connect a vacuum gauge to the parking brake vacuum release control motor vacuum hose.
    • Start the engine and run at idle speed.
    • Depress the brake pedal.
    • Shift the transmission into DRIVE.
    • Is the vacuum 34 kPa (10 in Hg)? 

    Yes  : GO to  A4.

    No  : GO to A2.

  2. A2 CHECK FOR VACUUM SUPPLY TO THE PARKING BRAKE VACUUM RELEASE SWITCH 
    • Press the brake pedal.
    • Shift the transmission into PARK.
    • NOTE: The vacuum supply to the parking brake vacuum release switch can be checked at the in-line hose connector below the instrument panel.
    • Disconnect the parking brake vacuum release switch vacuum hose at the in-line connector.
    • Is vacuum present? 

    Yes  : GO to A3.

    No  : REPAIR the vacuum supply.

  3. A3 CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE VACUUM RELEASE SWITCH 
    • Apply vacuum to the parking brake vacuum release switch inlet hose using a vacuum tester.
    • Can vacuum be maintained? 

    Yes  : CHECK for binding or sticking mechanical parking brake components. GO to SYMPTOM CHART .

    No  : INSTALL a new parking brake vacuum release switch. TEST the system for normal operation.

  4. A4 CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE VACUUM RELEASE MOTOR 
    • Apply vacuum to the parking brake vacuum release motor using a vacuum tester.
    • Can vacuum be maintained? 

    Yes  : INSTALL a new parking brake control. REFER to PARKING BRAKE CONTROL . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No  : INSTALL a new parking brake vacuum release motor. TEST the system for normal operation.
