Pinpoint Test E: DTC C1222 - Wheel Speed Mismatch

NOTE: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.
  1. E1 CHECK THE ABS HARNESS AND MODULE FOR WATER INTRUSION 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C135
    • Inspect the ABS module connector and module for water intrusion.
    • Is there any evidence of water entry?  
    1. YES  : CLEAN the connector and dry it out with low-pressure compressed air. INSPECT for evidence of water entry and repair as necessary. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.
    2. NO  : Go to  E2.
  2. E2 CHECK FOR CORRECT TIRE SIZE AND AIR PRESSURE 
    • Verify that all the tires are the correct size for the vehicle and that they are all the same size.
    • Verify that the air pressure in all the tires is correct.
    • Are the tire sizes and air pressure OK? 
    1. YES  : Go to  E3.
    2. NO  : ADJUST the tire pressure as necessary. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.

      INSTALL a new tire(s) as necessary. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.

  3. E3 MONITOR THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR PIDs 
    • Connect: ABS Module C135
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: DataLogger ABS Module
    • Monitor the following wheel speed sensor PIDs while driving the vehicle at a constant speed:
      • Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor (LF_WSPD)
      • Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor (RF_WSPD)
      • Rear Differential Wheel Speed (R_DIF_SPD)
    • Do all 3 PID values match each other? 
    1. YES  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.
    2. NO  : If both  front PIDs match each other but do not  match the rear PID, go to  E4.

      If the front PIDs do not  match each other but one  front PID matches the rear PID, go to  E6.

      If none of the PIDs match each other, go to  E6.

  4. E4 CHECK THE PCM AXLE RATIO (AXLE) PID 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: DataLogger PCM
    • Read and record the AXLE PID value.
    • Does the PID value match the axle that is installed on the vehicle? 
    1. YES  : Go to  E5.
    2. NO  : RECONFIGURE the PCM. REFER to Programmable Module Installation in MODULE CONFIGURATION article. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.
  5. E5 CHECK THE ABS MODULE DTCs 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Self Test ABS Module
    • Read and record the ABS module DTCs
    • Is DTC U0115 and/or U0073 present? 
    1. YES  : REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article to diagnose the HS-CAN bus.
    2. NO  : REFER to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 4R70E/4R75E article or AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - TORQSHIFT article to diagnose the transmission OSS sensor.
  6. E6 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR FOR DAMAGE AND/OR LOOSENESS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
    • NOTE: Examine the wheel speed sensor wire carefully with a good light. Failure to verify damage in the wheel speed sensor wire can lead to unnecessary installation of a new component.
    • Inspect the wheel speed sensor mounting for looseness. Check for corrosion on the wheel speed sensor mounting flange. Clean as necessary.
    • Is the wheel speed sensor OK? 
    1. YES  : Go to  E7.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front  in this article. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.
  7. E7 CHECK FOR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RING DAMAGE 
    • Remove the wheel speed sensor.
    • Inspect the wheel speed sensor rings for damaged or missing teeth.
    • Is the wheel speed sensor ring OK? 
    1. YES  : If the active wheel speed sensor tool is available, go to  E8.

      If the active wheel speed sensor tool is not available, go to  E10.

    2. NO  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front  in this article. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.
  8. E8 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OUTPUT USING THE SPECIAL TOOL 
    • Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor
    • Connect the special tool to the wheel speed sensor connectors.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Select the correct system polarity on the special tool and turn the special tool power switch to the ON position.
    • Is the module output LED illuminated? 
    1. YES  : Go to  E9.
    2. NO  : Go to  E11.
  9. E9 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT WITH THE SPECIAL TOOL 
    • Raise the suspect wheel until it can spin freely. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
    • While monitoring the special tool, slowly spin the suspect wheel.
    • Is the current level LED illuminated green and do the sensor output LEDs illuminate and flash? 
    1. YES  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.
    2. NO  : If the current level LED is illuminated green and the sensor output LEDs do not illuminate or if the current level LED is illuminated red, INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front  in this article. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.

      If the current level LED is illuminated green and the sensor output LEDs illuminate green but do not flash, INSPECT the wheel speed sensor tone ring and INSTALL new if necessary. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor Ring - Front  in this article. If the tone ring is OK, INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front . TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.

  10. E10 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OUTPUT 
    • Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the suspect wheel speed sensor pins, harness side.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front  in this article. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.
    2. NO  : Go to  E11.
  11. E11 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN 
    NOTE: Both circuits must be checked for each DTC.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C135
    • For the LF sensor  , measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C135-27, circuit 521 (TN/OG), harness side LF wheel speed sensor C150-1, circuit 521 (TN/OG), harness side.
      • ABS module C135-28, circuit 522 (TN/BK), harness side LF wheel speed sensor C150-2, circuit 522 (TN/BK), harness side.
    • For the RF sensor  , measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C135-3, circuit 514 (YE/RD), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor C160-1, circuit 514 (YE/RD), harness side.
      • ABS module C135-4, circuit 516 (YE/BK), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor C160-2, circuit 516 (YE/BK), harness side.
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  E12.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.
  12. E12 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Check ABS module C135 for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
      • spread terminals.
    • Connect: ABS C135
    • Make sure the ABS connector seats correctly.
    • Test drive the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph), carry out at least one ABS stop and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module  in this article. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST DRIVE the vehicle above 32 km/h (20 mph) and CARRY OUT at least one ABS stop.
